Danny Way breaks his back

Around the world on four wheels

In Brazil, Danny Way broke his back on the Megaramp. He will recover, of course, because all Megaramp competitors are actually time traveling cyborgs built by Skynet. Watch the video after the jump. It’s not in English, but really, it’s more entertaining this way. Speaking of entertainment. Rob Thomson now holds the world record for Longest Journey by Skateboard, clocking in at 12,159km, or about 7,500 miles. It’s confusing though, because the “journey” took place in different non-adjacent locales and had periods of weeks in between legs. Sounds more like a record for the biggest lapse of judgement by Guinness officials. Maybe they cut him some slack due to the unsual circumstances reported by One India:

The strangest food he tried was horse-penis salami in Kyrgyzstan, which he said tasted “like the smell of a sweaty, old, dirty horse.

Uh yeah. Go figure. You can read all about it in his forthcoming book about the experience.

  • Well, when the issue of horse penis consumption is involved, one must be sure that the details are consistent with the truth.

    🙂

    Sweet site by the way.

  • Oh and by way of addendum, Guinness World Records have not yet approved my claim. I did the trip solo and unsupported, so basically they have to take my word that I actually did the whole overland 12,159km by skateboard. I only sent the report and logbooks and witness signatures in to them in London a week ago, so it’ll take the typically long 8 weeks for them to get back to me about whether they are OK with accepting my evidence.

  • Hi Kilwag,

Rob Thomson, the dude that skated the recent 12,000km skateboard journey.

Thanks for the comment about my wee trip.

Fair comment about non-adjacent locales. I think however that you may be getting confused with the fact that I ate horse penis in Kyrgyzstan while cycling 12,000km from Japan to Switzerland. I think that’s where the reporter that wrote that article where you got that information from got confused too.

It was in Switzerland that I switched to the longboard. From Switzerland, all overland travel was by longboard, and the 12,159km that I have claimed as a new record only includes distance that I travelled by longboard. It doesn’t include the bits by airplane or boat.

If you’re keen to see my report of the trip that I have submitted to Guinness, you can download it here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?yzyvdnetykt

Also, you can download the Guinness World Record regulations for the Longest Journey by Skateboard, that allow for alternate forms of travel between major legs of the journey. In my case, it was by boat across the Atlantic (between the European Leg and North America Leg), and by airplane and train from the end of the North America Leg and the start of the Asia Leg.

Admittedly, getting from Europe to North America by boat took almost two months, but I was moving most of the time, and had my board with me. All part of the journey, I reckon.

See my website page here for info on the record attempt guidelines: http://www.14degrees.org/en/?page_id=715

It’s a pretty dull and dry process, and when it comes down to it, the joy of being on a board and travelling through all the awesome cultures and meeting masses of interesting people is what made the trip worth while.

    Cheers,
    Rob Thomson

Thanks for filling us in. I still can’t get past being corrected about where someone said another person ate a horse penis without it being a full on flame war.

  • Get well soon Danny. (as if…) He’s insane. And one badass melon farmer* (*mdrfkr)

  • O campeonato ficou um pouco menos interessante sem o Danny Way, e as coisas ficaram mais f
