eBay Watch: September 2008

September 2008. The economy is really starting to contract. The housing market has been sucking for ages, and now banks are failing and the economy is streaking towards recession. Skateboard prices are not immune. They are starting on a downward trend, which will continue for sometime I would imagine. It’s a really good time to buy, not so good if you are a seller.

  1. Thanks Neil…300$ for the Grisham seemed really low eh?…also, I agree that the Skate Outlaw was one of Thrasher’s best offerings, I was flying one when we all got stood-up by Doggy Style so that puts it back to 86-87 I suppose…

  2. Rip Stick! Awesome! I’m pretty sure there was a board from the 60’s that said “longboard” so that Madrid wouldn’t be the first. I’ll have to dig around for it.

The Phil Edwards deck looks pristine. Considering it was the first ever signature model, I’m surprised it didn’t reach the 1k mark.

I have a totally different recollection of those Airwalks, The first time I saw them I thought they looked like crappy Vans knockoffs made in Taiwan. They were so hideous. I remember they were supposed to be “skate shoes” but they very soon became available in department stores. I thought they were the opposite of core, and I remembered we disagreed about them at the time too. Crazy that I can recall that.

I agree with you on that Hoosi deck. Something about it really makes it seem solid. It’s so simple but I can’t stop looking at it.

I wonder who made that Keith Haring deck.

  3. Thrasher had some cool shirts, but it sucked that you couldn’t pick the color. I remember ordering the “Prevent this tragedy” shirt and being super bummed when it showed up at my apartment in purple. As a result I didn’t wear it much, and it’s still in good shape, minus the musty smell of age and the fact that I cut the sleeves off..

  4. The John Thomas model is sick. You never actually “saw him ripping”, but you did see pictures of him gnarling those frontside tuck knee airs of launch ramps. I think he actually was in Savannah Slamma. I think they even went so far as to call those “JT” airs. They were rad. Alva’s whole team was punk rock. Murf, Danforth, Cooksie, Fred Smith, etc. and the boards all had that killer stain fade around the outside. I must have skated all of them at one time. The Danforth especially had a cool tri-concave. Also, the Fingers model brings back memories–that board was way heavy but way rad. Then I went to H-street.

  5. I rode abunch of those Alva – Danforth tri-trails. They were the bee’s knees.

  6. I’m digg’n on that 9″ SC board. My pick of the month. Simple graphic, simple time. Also, I recall the first of those Airwalks coming in a red/black colorway with a lace saver flap. They were then available in all black, still with the lace saver flap. Those blue ones seem to be the later cheesey ones prior to going to the multicolor moon boot style.

Despite the fact that Danforth could not ollie, his boards were awesome for ollies. That tail was HUGE. I first ollied onto picnic tables riding his first Alva board.

  9. this is good news. skateboards are worth about 50 bucks, no more.

  12. Neil,

I just figured you must be dying to know the real answer to your speculation about swedish skater Hans Jacobsson on Titus Skates. He is in fact a professional chef, apart from running his own resturant and company Hansmat in Borl

  13. Hans Jacobsson didn’t have a fear of chefs. He was one. That’s why the chef theme appeared on all his Titus deck graphics.

  14. Hi Neil,
