Northern Virginia spot check

Northern Virginia spot check

East coast reader John Egerston sent in a few pictures from a semi-recent spot tour in northern Virgina. Roots = Two ditches and a full pipe. Photos by Mike Alexander.

Northern Virginia ditch

Northern Virginia ditch

…a pipe underneath a railroad. We had to climb up a rocky embankment and drop into the pipe from above. There are about 7 pipes, and the two on the end were dry when we got there, but a huge thunderstorm blasted through, and before we could even ride, the water rolled through. You can see in the photo that I’m soaked from climbing in the storm, and then I suffered the indignity of standing in that nice pipe, and literally watching the water rise up and roll through, washing out the second half of my skate trip.

…Normally, the water flow is slow enough to kind of wade across. You can only get to the pipes from one side, and the two that stay dry are on the far side. On this day, the water was too high so that’s why we had to climb up and across and then drop in from the top. We were waiting under a bridge for the rain to slow down… …We were carrying skateboards and brooms up this slick, steep rock embankment in a driving rain storm. But, we got in and the pipe was dry. We were just about to sweep a little and then take our first runs when the water started as a trickle, but in only seconds it was flowing through and we were screwed. The ditches we skated earlier that day, and they were pretty fun.

Yee haw! I skated it last week – awesome mission. It’s beyond crusty but there are some workable spots. For anyone asking for the location, I was able to find it using the clues in this blog post. Good luck.

    where is this located at?

  • yo im from nova where is that spot

  • If you had to jump down off the rail road, you took the wrong way to get there. There’s a paved path coming from the library.

Anyway to get ahold John. I am close to the area and have been dreaming of skating a fullpipe for since I was 8. Would love to come clean and skate with your crew.
