Jefferson Starship - Skateboard

Jefferson Starship – Skateboard circa 1976

Remember the novelty Sneakers and Lace and the Skateboardin’ USA album? Jefferson Starship has a track called Skateboard on their 1976 album titled Earth. T.Rex had a demo track called Skateboard, but I don’t know the date of that one since it wasn’t released. I think I’d actually rather listen to Sneakers and Lace’ hokey skateboard songs than this serious track from Jefferson Starship. Lyrics and music after the jump. Conahan sent this to me a while ago. By rights this should be his post. Where did you find it MC? [Images – Vinyl Records Collectors Guide]

Jefferson Starship – Skateboard from the LP Earth

Lyrics to Jefferson Starship’s Skateboard

NOTE: There are more lyrics than appear here, but the only places they are listed have them copy protected and don’t even get them right. “I’d drain my pool for that fool” becomes “I’d drain my boo for that fool”.

Hold that thought. One site lets you embed a player, but they still get the lyrics wrong.

Skateboard

Whoa whoa whoa mama
Here I go whoa again
Too fast on the downhill
Faster than I can run

If miles turned to inches
You know that man would roll
All the way around the world tonight
Look at him go
No jumping off the ride
At 30 miles per hour
Iron brains and ball bearings
Give him the power

Whoa whoa take a look
Whoa whoa look at that man
Whoa whoa you can see it
That man is free

Whoa whoa whoa mama
Here I go whoa again
Too fast on the downhill
Faster than I can roll

You got to see him to beleive him
Can’t you hear ’em callin’
You got to hear him, there’s no fear
In that man
Can’t you hear ’em callin’
He’s like a mean molten gold
Can’t you hear ’em callin’
Lord, he’s got to have his story told
Can’t you fear you’re fallin’
Tounge tip slip’n inand out like a lizard
Can’t you fear you’re fallin’
Ah, good god, that man’a a damn wizard
Can’t you hear ’em callin’
Black hair snapn’ like a bull whip in the air
Can’t you feel you’re fallin’
Red roll’n wheels run’n for the downhill
Dare me!

  • I just saw that Steve Olson footage yesterday. I seriously thought she said “drink my poo” for the first time around.

Why’s everyone hatin!??? I heard this on 1978 Steve Olson film and it fits his part soo well and I had NO clue who it was. ANyone singing about draining pools for their man is cool in my books. Amazing it was Grace Slick! I don’t worship bands but this one was from left field weirdness

  • I didn’t know Grace Slick was a skate betty…

  • sea cliff vert ramp

Jefferson Airplane/ Starship. Ack! One of the worst bands ever! While tards here in SF were groovin’ to those hacks the real action was going on in El Cerrito (Golliwogs/CCR) and San Jose (The Count Five and The Chocolate Watchband).

  • Joey Starship.

  • Grace Slick signed a poster of George Orton doing a frontside air in a bowl with “I’d drain my pool for that man.” The poster hung in our local skatepark pro shop. She was in town for show, stopped by the skatepark and signed the poster. Circa 1979’ish. True story. Wonder if trolling skateparks for dudes was part of her m.o.

Yeah, I was fixing that as you were commenting.

  • You forgot the part where Grace Slick says she’ll drain her pool for that fool.
