Skate and Annoy: Daily

SOTW 7-21-08: Mark Conahan

SOTW 7-21-08: It’s deep. Very deep.

This week’s Shot of the Week features Mark Conahan in a photo that he says he’s embarrassed of, but shouldn’t be. When is two and a half feet below the coping still an admirable feat? When there’s another 8 feet below you and the transition is ridiculously tight. This is the horizontal crop of the pic so it would fit in the post reasonably. Check out the vertical frame Shot of the Week and then follow the rest of this post to get an idea of how deep that deep end is. This pool was demolished this morning, so everyone who feels obligated to comment on how it looks like a piece of crap can just save your breath. Someone has to skate the crap so the super cool tough guys can get all the glory. Thanks again to the guy who gave us the opportunity to skate this very short lived pool. Much appreciated.

deep deep pool

Figure on an average height guy standing on top of another guy’s head, and he might reach the top of the coping.

Thought so. It was a death pit, but for one morning, it was our death pit.

Rich has more pics over at EPM

  • btw i was just joking about making it over the light, that pool looks like a death pit… not to say it wouldnt be fun trying.

  • DEATH BEFORE DISMEMBERMENT

Huh, this was summer of 04′, anyway if its not dead Great, I’ll make sure to go back.

OK, maybe not that recent, back cover of Juice #63, the one with Lance on the cover. It’s Juice magazine, so with their fluctuating publication schedule, that advert could have been slated to come out last year…

  • LURK WHO'S TALKING SHIT

Rather, maybe he was fucking WITH ME, and not in the middle of getting laid while also explaining about Pink Motel. Anyways what mag did you see the ad in Kilwag?

  • LURK WHO'S TALKING SHIT

Haven’t seen the ad, nor have I ever been back but Ben said they were re-modeling/finishing that pool and it would be permantly outlawed thereafter.

I honestly never knew that much about it until my introduction. Or maybe he was fucking when he explained the importance of the session. Or maybe I was drunk and something was lost in translation.
But, rad. Lance rips that pool.

The Pink Motel just showed up in a Nike SB ad with Lance Mountain.

  • LURK WHO'S TALKING TOO

Thats gnarly, I wouldnt have started at the waterfall.
I wont deny, it looks sketchy.
Definitely wasnt saying I could’ve cleared the light, and i agree, seems alot of room to push. Getting the speed without pumping/carving your way to the deep might have been impossible in that pool. Kudos.

Pink motel was a blast-went there w/Schroeder shortly before it bit the dust.
Mind you I grew up in L.A and that was my first and last time there. Before that I only had knowledge of it via bones brigade videos.

MC, what do ya think of the kidney pool at Chino park(for a park pool)?

  • Never did skate the pink, wish I had.

It would have been fun to try to do more in that deep pit. There was a big waterfall and plenty of room to push – timing was critical though. I started from the top of the waterfall for my first several runs, it looked unskateable. Given another session, we probably could have gotten over the light if not hit the lip. Gnarly quick transition on the way down though. Triangular loveseats in two corners you can’t see had possibilities.

  • LURK WHO'S TALKING

I would have loved to take a run, maybe I’ll chalk it up to envy as I’ll never get the chance.
Mark- ever hit the Pink Motel before it’s RIP?
Even for sub-amatuer random(who favors street), it was epic to ride it.

Chalk it up to optical illusion. Speed is at the heart of everything, so yeah. Getting up high enough required going up in the corner, or some sort of bio-mechanical ankle and knee joint combo that would allow you to hit that wall more head on. Maybe someone could do it. It would have been a gargantuan task, and Mark is no slouch.

  • LURK WHO'S TALKING

Mark obviously rips, I mean shit, the press loves him!
Buuut…maybe it’s an optical illusion in the photo, it looks like the real challenge getting over the light was just speed.

I love jersey barriers and vert walls and this just doesnt look the same. Nor does it appear if you went straight on you would scrap anything but your own flesh, when you eat shit comming down fakie. Just the same it looks sketchy, and good photo.

  • Too far away for you maybe. Plastic confidence – that rector pad was new old stock from EBay. Just kidding, It’s one of my old ones – I lost one of my good ones.

Here’s a helpful hint from Helloise. Just wash them dudes! Don’t stuff them in your bag when they’re all sweaty. I throw them in the bed of my crappy old toyota pickup to air out on the ride home.

  • Cool photo

  • A

Yeah right. Elliptical tranny, close to a jersey barrier. Scraping he nose and tail if you went straight at it. Mark could have made a run at it, but the light was too far away from the rideable tranny – which was in the corners. Rough as hell too, surface like grip tape.

  • 4′ of tranny 6′ of vert whats the problem? anybody make it over the light?

  • the dude

that guy is sooooooooooo good, can he do 900’s or what!? SHIT! i mean FUCK!ING SHIT. i mean that is some serial wallriders hee’s got goin, hella ripping the gnar, you wanna play pokemon? marky mark. ooooooh yeah period semi colon

sick, what sad day that is gone now. blowing out pools is fun…..when there gone

  • Killer shot though.

  • Whats the Barney luv-a-fair with 80’s rector elbow pads? Those things sucked ass back in the day and they just stink like ass now.

  • ”omigawd you’re totally blowing this pool out, WAAAAAHHHH!!!! Burp/Fart

Just surprise some retard hasn’t posted that sort of comment yet. Pretty intense looking (dead) pool.

  • It almost looks like a picture of a model pool with an out of proportion skater. It would be interesting to put that shot through the model-skatepark-filter that MC does.

  • naw shit thats a cool pic. looks like he got higher than i could!
