Skate and Annoy: Daily

Mark Conahan on Fox Tv

Still even more old guys who skateboard.

Even though he’s “all old and rickety,” Fox 12 spotlighted Mark Conahan in the Oregon Sports Final segment. Did you know he invented skateboarding in Portland? And then he went on to fund, design and build all the skateparks in Portland. All this was done in his spare time away from his job drawing skateboard comics. You can watch him being interviewed by a barn owl on the FOX 12 web site. Keep your eyes peeled for other notable figures in the Portland skate scene media. I wonder why he’s not promoting this…

  • the dude

    40 is the new 30…….

  • Excellent. “Old and rickety…” 🙂

  • Inspiring. I was 43 yesterday… (grumble, moan I don’t feel so bad about it now!!) but I’m still ripping and trying to nail something new every session.

  • How many times have you been an eye witness to an event and then seen it reported TOTALLY wrong in the media? Makes you wonder if the EVER get anything right!

They actually got some decent footage of Mark ripping! Mad props old man! 🙂 Keep killing it!

  • It is a barn owl! Hoot!

  • Yeah PH! How was the rest of your trip? I’m doing a travelogue should be done soon.

  • Hey I think I saw that guy at Jacksonville recently!

  • exaggeration and sensationalism from Fox? Never…

  • skategeezer

imagine, you know over 75 people over the age of 40 who STILL SKATE…

    faux news…

still, any publicity is good publicity as long as they get your website correct

i for one am proud of you.
    well done.

  • Lots of background Grover. Lots of cheesy reporter jokes. Skateboarders are gorgeous people.

  • SLEESTAK SHIRT SIGHTING!

  • That MC guy is soooo OLD. Good coverage.

Side note; I think every local news segment/news paper article I’ve ever seen that covers skateboarding is always either blown out/over exaggerated or has some goofy caption like “Crazy kids on home-made U go above and beyond the saftey bump”

  • I am so over that Conahan guy.

I enjoyed the piece although I felt I was given too much credit. Rocco was hilarious.

My fellow Skaters for Portland Skateparks board members and volunteers (Sarah Burgess, Tom Miller and Sonny Robertson and others) contributed as much if not more than I. The creative northwest skatepark designers and builders are responsible for the world skatepark resurgence and sponsors including the City of Portland, Nike, The Tony Hawk Foundation and many other citizens and businesses contributed financial support to the skatepark effort. I am happy to have been able to help with a little fundraising, design and building along the way.

Additionally, while I like to think I was an early carrier of vert skating to the Portland area, many friends and acquaintances were skating and building ramps when I moved here from Southern California in 1977.

    I
