George Brailey! Damm! Assjak? Is that normal dave in disguise, the Bump Bowl got filled in, i think, and last i heard about George he woke up with a knife to his throat wielded by his nutty new punk rock bride but that was like 15 or 16 years ago. Salem was brutal always has been. The State’s metal institutions, Prisons, and all their populations poured out into a medium sized city without the resources or the will to handle them and a pissed off disenfranchised working class, wondering what the hell happened to their youth and vigor. Growing up skating there was like pummeling a hornets nest with a baseball bat. Skate fast and dont look back! It was a dirty realism that i kinda miss sometimes.

In the summer of ’90 i was skating the “Bump Bowl” a gnarly
old pool in Salem, no coping and a big bump from the encroaching tree roots it was situated right in the middle of a huge blackberry bramble. I was skating with Tony Cochrane he told me he had skated it in ’79, making small talk I asked what he’d been up to lately he said “golf” I said “hmmm…boring” he said “yeah…it’s not as much of a dance as skating is but I like it.” then with out another word he rolled into the sketchy deep end floated one of the smoothest backside ollies I’ve ever seen over the shattered light followed up with a frontside snapback grind into the shallow…that fucker could dance.
