The Knife – Heartbeats

Here’s a still from the music video for the 2003 track Heartbeats from the Swedish band The Knife. It’s got some vintage skateboarding footage, about 15 seconds or so looped repeatedly. Those kids in the striped shirts look kind of cool going downhill together. I thought they might be up to some editing trickery at first.

Anyone know where the footage came from?

  • No, this is definitely the mid-sixties and it looks like the Hobie team as noted above:

Although it also looks like a few skaters are riding Makaha boards.
Check this Bruce Brown short from the same time period:

  • I’ve been searching around for this very tidbit of information as well. I’ve been dying to know about these clips!

My 2cents: It is real, it is vintage. I’d guess very late 1970s, very early 1980s. I totally agree with the commenter who said that kids are not skating like that today, nor do they ride long boards like those.
As far as similar looking boys I don’t believe is video editing, I think they might be twins. I think it’s just the small portion, obviously on a loop. My best guess is that this is someone’s home movie footage, perhaps like XMAS morning, where they can’t wait to try out their new present, along with someone who got a big cam recorder to try out.
Looks like suburban North America, west coast, in newer-ish housing developments.

  • I’m in no way an expert in skateboarding history, but.

Based on the pictures off of Hobart “Hobie” Alter’s hall of fame page on the “Skateboarding Heritage Foundation” website (attempting to link the page below), I believe it was filmed in the 60’s?

The boy second to the right of the last picture on that page, seems similar to the front kid in the video, even same shirt?

  • team zephyr? that kid with long hair, stacey peralta? idk

  • is it the Hobie team?

  • hard to tell if that’s really vintage… the filming technique seems current. Regardless… cool vid.

    • gotta be vintage. don’t think they’ve made those boards since 1982, and there damn sure aren’t kids around who ride like that these days

  • A

I had a vision of the kid dipping his head in the leaf wave keeping it in too long and hitting his head on the fire hydrant.

  • ….sounds like that band Whale.

  • enemy combatant

That’s more like it! Some nice 60’s style cross-stepping. Can’t say I care for the birds much but those are some cool striped shirts.

  • I don’t really like this band, but the skating parts go pretty well with the “tuneskies”.
