hit by a train

Sure, he was hit by a train and lived, but was he wearing a helmet?

In Oregon, the Lake Oswego Observer reports
that a kid named Kosh McClure was hit by a train while skating and lived to tell the tale.

Kosh McClure didn’t know how close he had come to dying until he awoke on a sidewalk on State Street. “I was laying on the ground and I couldn’t see,” McClure recalled. “Everything was really fuzzy. Everyone was like, “You got hit by a train!'” As he recovered this week from a near-death experience, McClure and his mother, Jodi Roderick McClure, counted their blessings. The 15-year-old Lake Oswego High School sophomore spoke calmly about what it’s like to be hit by a locomotive.

And no, he wasn’t wearing a helmet, so that finally debunks that myth, huh kids? But the man won’t leave him be. The Lake Oswego police chief mentioned that Kosh should have been wearing a helmet by state law, and his case has been referred to juvenile court for a city ordinance regarding hazardous riding. That will teach him. Amazingly, some people are blaming the markings on the street and not the skater. Check out Train vs. Skateboard.

Lake Oswego is heavily anti-skateboard. The pigs give out $100+ traffic tickets for things like not staying in your lane on a quiet street and they illegally confiscate boards until the fine is paid.

It will only get worse after this.

  2. You all should read the comments posted below that article. One person gets you fired up. Don’t let Marek see it!!!

  3. ummm I skate down Lake O’s Avenue A sidewalk wearing a Frankenstein mask almost every Saturday morning and the cops just laugh at me…not one hint of anti-skate for me so far…

  4. If you’re going to ride in the street, you should have to obey the traffic laws like any other transportation device. The law is not anti-skateboard, it’s anti-dumbass. Sure, the scientific laws of physics govern that a car will win every time if you put it against a bike or a skateboard. Go skate in the park, go skate in your cul-de-sac and get out of the road when someone’s coming. Don’t you go darting out into the street and act like I’m the asshole when I can’t stop my car in time. Sometimes I get so mad, I swear I’ll hit every last one of them. This opens a bigger can of worms than intended, but maybe the cops really should leave that kid alone. His existence and likelihood of reproduction in the future is enough Darwinism for one city.

  6. Paige- think all the cyclists in the Portland Area follow those rules? If they did, we wouldn’t be on the news weekely about a death. Sharing the road starts at each persons mental state, its a question of whether or not they can overcome frustraion and in-patience. People talking on cell phones, eating, putting on makeup are the reasons accidents have increased in our age of ‘conveinence”.

This situation was just bad timing on a kid crossing and a train coming in at a decent rate of speed. Do those factors justify it being an accident? I think so.

Have you ever met a kid that is completely aware of his sourroundings? I doubt you have. Darwism has nothing to do with this- go to that intersection and watch a train go through, you might have a new perspective.

  7. I’m not saying that I don’t have these and other conveniences. I know the proper time to use/do them. When other people don’t, tough titties. When a kid is trying to grind a railroad track, then what the fuck? Parents have an obligation to their children to allow them to be aware of their surroundings. I’m not saying that this 15 year old kid should be followed by his mom, but everyone knows basics: look both ways before crossing the street, listen for approaching vehicles, etc. I’ve seen a train before. We see deaths on the news on a daily or weekly basis because there are some things that are unavoidable. I’ve also been driving and had a fresh green light, with bikers in a perpendicular lane totally run their red light without warning in a 30 MPH speed zone. If I had hit them, would it have been my fault? Hell no. Would I have felt bad? I might. It doesn’t change the fact that people are responsible for their own safety. I’m closer in age to this kid, and most of you are closer in age to my parents (I know, ouch–but I’m trying to make a point). I see totally stupid things everyday. Having sympathy for everyone is a lot harder than expecting more from people, more intelligence, and if not, then good riddance to the lot of them. I bet this kid will know next time.

  8. Paige- its a game of tennis now and comprehension. Now where in the article was the young man “grinding’ the rail. Merely crossing and “popping his board” into the air to clear a small gap where the sidewalk and rubber mat meet. If your picturing he was grinding the rail, then you did not “comprehend” the article very cleary. It was an accident, he’s lucky to be alive. Take a breather and slow-down just a few MPH’s- OK? Maybe even re-read everything.

I’m glad Kosh survived his run in with the train, but I would have much more sympathy if his argument was “My helmet impaired my hearing and vision and that is why I got hit by a train” Was this a H.O. train? How big and loud of an object does it take??????????????????????????????????

The LO pigs hide out and ticket skaters going down Greentree when there are NO FUCKING CARS IN SIGHT! Just because some menopausal old women like Paige (the asshole) complained about skaters carving 18 inches into their precious driveways while going down the street.

Fight the power! Ride your skateboard!

  13. The kid was mid-ollie when he got hit…Did I read that right?…and the fact that he was airborne saved his life. Amazing!

  18. e.c. I propose that skateboarding is the only thing that you could afford to do in Lake Oswego. And try following Dr. Brad around for a day and saving a life, his skills in O.R. are pretty “gnar”…

Why would following around “Dr. Brad” all day save a life? I rather think that it would get in his way. That’s of course if he’s not just cruising around Lake Oswego spending his patients money.

  26. Ahhh.. the camaraderie of skateboarding. It gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling.

  27. …and “sounds really gnar” is such a great put-down. My point was that like begets like. WitchyPoo is right, this is a selfish and uneducated scene…

  35. Hey Pinchy, (or WitchyPoo?) Yeah, I was going to take lessons on how not to be selfish, but they only offer them In Lake Oswego, and as you said, I can’t afford to do anything there but skate… Selfish scene? You sound like you come from a self righteous scene where you think you’re better than everyone just because you can afford Lake Oswego. That’s pretty shallow for someone who is so unselfish. Poumpous douchebag… You’re welcome to the scene in Lake Oswego. They can’t even keep a decent skate shop open for longer than two years. Great skate parks too.

I fail to see how skateboarders are selfish.
Mother Teresa skated …and its well documented
MLK jr. was goofy-footed. I also read a statistic that 1 in every 5 NYC firemen skate. So no, not selfish at all.
You need to after that selfish prick, Lance Armstrong. Whats that fat-cat done for anyone lately?! Plus, I heard when he’s not preoccupied with his own testicals he’s out riding bike of all things. What a selfish loser.

Yeah, someone really needs to point out how selfish we.. “skateboarders”..wait, yeah ok that means all of us,are.

As opposed, to, you know, all those philanthropists on rollerblades and BMX. Yeah, we oughta be ahsamed of ourselves, lets just ditch this scene. BTW, wasn’t some guy on “Smarter than a 5th Grader” for CHARITY recently?

I could’ve sworn that guy had something to do with skateboarding…
what a perfect forum to really get us to listen..and not be selfish. I don’t even know where to begin, you desperate, desperate housewife.

  38. Kosh's Mom on November 21, 2007 - Reply

If Kosh had not been on his skateboard, he would have died. He was in fact hit mid ollie over the tracks while skating on the sidewalk, not the road. On his left was a row of shrubs which blocked his view of the oncoming train. On his right was the noise of the evening rush hour traffic. A vehicle in that traffic was caught between the bars when they came down quickly for the freight engine. There are all kinds of regulations, ordinances, and technical details regarding trains’ crossings. I know little about these. I always just ask Kosh to be safe, and the fact that he was on the sidewalk seems to be lost on everyone. He was not wearing a helmet. Here is a thought, why don’t you strap on a helmet and stand in front of a moving train? Uh, right. We know what will happen.

Kosh will be 16 in a couple of months, state law will no longer require him to wear a helmet by the time he is able to skate again.
    Irony.
He was on his way to grab a bite to eat. Any other mode of transportation would have been fatal. Lake Oswego may have rich widows and cats and skateboarding doctors (whatever that has to do with it) but what it doesn’t have is a marking on the sidewalk for the people on the sidewalk that a train is on its way. No light, no bar, no gate like on the very opposite side of the street.

Kosh is amaising! He is doing so well. His little sister, who saw what she thought was her brother dying in front of her, may be more scarred than Kosh. All he knew was the ollie, and waking up bruised, blind, and broken to a croud of people telling Kosh he’d been hit by a train.

The police were very cool, OHSU was great to him, he WILL recover, and the board waits…

…Kosh and his board survived a train. Every other arguement is just hot air.

glad to here that another person, oblivious to the world, will be with us longer than needed. Train tracks are another ‘roadway’ that should be treated like any other street. You don’t go across with out looking. And how the hell do you not hear a train, unless you have music jammed in your ears like so many dumbass kids these days.

  40. Good to hear that he is doing well.

The helmet crack was for sarcasm only. Wearing helmets and safety gear while skating is a very divisive topic among skateboarders.

If Kosh had not been on his skateboard, he would have died. ……BULLSHIT……..if the little bastard hadn’t been on his board, he would have been walking and probably not stepped out in front of the oncoming train, or is his own mother asserting that her kid isn’t smart enough to not walk in front of a train?

WTF kind of comment is THAT? You go too far, even by my standards.

  43. Yeah Ryan.. lay off man. You’re not really adding anything useful to the conversation. I think we’ve covered all the bases here. There’s no need for name calling. If you want to contradict the person posting as “Kosh’s Mom” then please do it in a civil manner.

And yes, I recognize the irony of trying to admonish a web poster named “Ryan Heckler”

Yeah,Im gunna side with reason/RYAN HECKLER,because that totally sounds right, and not the least bit calloused. Human life doesn’t mean shit if someone makes a stupid mistake, or a mistake at all for that matter.

Much like “Heckler” Im really dissapointed this kid isn’t gunna die. Im mean how the hell do you not hear a train? If only “some one” could provide some sort of explaination…anyone but the kids mom, cause what would she know? She doesnt sound well informed or like she even knows the situation so it should be okay to use foul language and be insulting to her.

Cause I know everyone here would love to be greeted with hostility if something tragic put their kid in the hospital and they were open about it.

Heckler..you do skate right? Well, like it or not, Kosh is part of “our” community too(unless he also “blades” or has a razor scooter) Have a little heart and lighten up man, maybe actually be stoked for someone, you sound bitter. It’s not like this kid pissed in your sink or anything.

Kosh’s Mom: glad to hear Kosh cheated death, hope his sister and him recover well. Also glad to hear he isn’t putting the board down. Thanks for your side.

  49. from the begining, on oct. 26 of 07 i was bombing a hill down towords the train tracks, the train that was coming was between to tall buildings so it was out of sight . the arms of the railroad crossing failed to come down over the sidewalk, i ollied over the tracks and in mid-air i was hit. next minute i woke up blind and confused but without any injuries. because i was in the air i survived insted of being ran over. It was a bad accident and a story to tell when i get older.

  50. Silly silly people. Kosh was not on the street, he was on a sidewalk. Kosh was not cited by the police or given any sort of warning because he was not breaking any laws. Koshes mother (yours truely) did not sue or get rich from the accident because, contrary to popular belief, some people are good, and sometimes good people live through tragic circumstances. The point is….live your life, love the life you live, and be grateful for every moment you survive the world.
