Roarockit school

School board

Sure, in the 70’s you could have made a skateboard deck in shop class. Now you have more options. Of course there is Paul Schmitt’s CreateAskate that we’ve covered here a little. CreateAskate is for educators only, so what about those of you who aren’t in grade school? Surely there are adults interested in learning how to make their own skateboards. Roarockit has an emphasis on possible use in school programs, but it’s always been available for individuals. Now Roarockit has a permanent facility for learning how to make skateboards. They had a grand opening of their Professional Skateboard Making School last weekend. Sounds like a good idea if you find the task of building your own vacuum press a little intimidating and need more hand holding than the take-home kit provides. If you want to see how skateboards are made the old fashioned way there’s another video and some more CreateASkate coverage after the jump.

How skateboards are made

This video of a small Canadian outfit (Thirteen) making skateboards was on some web magazine a few years ago, back before the term “Podcast” had been coined. It has recently resurfaced on Youtube. It looks like Thirteen Skateboards is still around although they seem to only have a MySpace site, and if they can’t get their shit together enough to register a domain name I’m not going to link to them because I am the crabby old Interwebs™ man.

  • Cool video and thanks for putting this up. Should go back to basics.

  • Thanks Kilwag for the posting on Skate And Annoy.

We have been teaching deckmaking since 2001 using our patented Thin Air Press system. Hundreds of schools worldwide use our kits to teach deckmaking. Using the Thin Air Press lets educators and deckmakers build decks completly from scratch. No pre-made blank decks in our classes but actually laminating individual veneers right from the start.

Lots of things happening here at Roarockit school. We are starting a Listen & Learn series. Our first speaker is Bruce Varsava founder of Coiler Composites. Bruce makes many of the world’s Olympic alpine snowboards. The event is on the 19th of October in Toronto at our facility.

Also we have started a board building club. Our first monthly meeting saw a bunch of longboarders show up with their custom sticks. It’s great to talk about deck construction with one another then to go out and give them a try.

    Ted from Roarockit

  • I can tell you that the Barrie park sucks. But I wish I would have known that Thirteen was up there, I would have taken advantage.
