Mike V. on Hockey
Mike V. landed a gig blogging about hockey for Anaheim’s Mighty Ducks which isn’t a big deal except that in the May 28th entry he claims to have created skateboard hockey. I’ll bet there are a few Jaks who might care to contradict him. I seem to remember skateboard hockey in the mid eighties when mike V was just an amateur. Maybe he just meant that he created it on his own without knowing others were already doing it.
Hockey is a bitch! Mike V. is so cuuute!
Either Mike Hill (Jaks Petaluma division) or Sporticus (Jaks Vancouver BC Division) most likely invented skate hockey. Mike brought it up to PDX in ’84 when he was petitioning to join the team. The first two Jaks reunions were in PDX and prominently featured skate hockey with the canucks kicking serious ass. Almost immediately local variants (no sticks or pads/squashed Schmidts cans as pucks)emerged in the underground parking garages in the no-mans land that was the 80’s “Pearl” district. Lots of good times with Huckabee, Chester, Danny Sargent, Chris Chaconi, Dave McBride,Muench Bros, Felchington, and the crew. Wasn’t so much NHL as it was smear the queer…
Press darlings the Stepe brothers (Negative Element/Rights of the Accused/Caustic Defiance) also wrote up their skate hockey game in an issue of their BMX Death zine in ’84…
Also, any skaters that actually play ice hockey? I only know one.
Mike V. was in Vancouver during part of the Skate Ranch daysso he probably decided to take credit for something he likely saw while in Vancouver. Still a ripper though.
