After the initial excitement died down over the figure eight with a metal full pipe crossover being built by Grindline in Dillon MT, some people began to speculate about the feasability of placing concrete over a metal full pipe. Basically, the thought was that the pipe would be too flexible and cause premature cracking, possibly falling apart. Set your fears aside because it looks like there is already one case where it has worked. The public skatepark in Lancaster County PA has a “unique pipe, which is a marriage of half-inch-thick steel over shotcrete, is the only one of its kind in the United States.” So there you have it.

Surely they can brace up the inside of the steel pipe like they do when they use plywood forms to build a concrete pipe. Just think of the steel pipe as a non-removable form.

You’re right, but the main point is there is some sort of pre-existing metal-over-concrete (or vice-versa) combination, so maybe it can be done. We’ll have to wait and see.

That ain’t the same thing. That PA deal looks to be an entirely steel top, concrete bottom. Doesn’t look to be possible to roll over it. The Grindline Montana will have the outside of the pipe concreted for the roll-over I think. We’ll still have to wait and see.
