THE BRIEFS - at Dantes, Portland OR - 6-30-06

Steal Yer Heart

The Briefs! Two great shows in two nights! Two music posts in a row too, don’t worry I won’t make a habit of it. The Briefs played a free show at Dantes last night. Also on the bill were the Punk Group (also great) and the Nice Boys (depends on the show). Not nearly as packed as it was for the Buzzcocks. Steal Yer Heart is the latest Briefs CD. When asked about a new release, the ever gracious Kicks said they were writing new songs. More pics after the jump.

Every time I see bassist Kicks at a show I tease him about being “the new guy” replacing fan fave Lance Romance. In any case, Kicks always puts up with it, even though he’s been with the band for something like 3 years now. Rightly he should just punch me in the face the next time I call him “The New Guy”. Go ahead, you have my permission. I actually did get punched in the eye at the show. It made me start to laugh and when the guy who did it tried to apologize it made me laugh even more. He gave up trying when he realized I was smiling and not mad at all. It’s almost impossible to be mad at a Briefs show. Whenever I see Chris the drummer in a club I never remember that he’s in the band. He looks like a merch guy or friend of the band. At this point I’m pretty much one of those sloppy drunk guys at these shows. I don’t get out much. The Briefs ended the night with New Pair of Shoes and I was so excited/inebriated that I took of my shoes and threw them at singer/guitarist Steve E. Nix who looked highly annoyed and somewhat perplexed at the same time. Ironically, they were actually a new pair of shoes. Sorry Steve. It won’t happen again. Unless of course I started a trend. Come on Briefs fans! Throw your shoes on stage during New Pair of Shoes. The pit will be more fun with everyone in socks!

Oh yeah, speaking of annoying drunks like myself, the guy in the center left shot above kept trying to get into my pictures. At one point he even begged me to let him take my picture, which I did. Never had that happen before. I haven’t mentioned Daniel J. Travanti.

Yeah. The bouncer made me leave the pit twice for the sake of other peoples safety. I tried to explain to him that I was mostly very vigilante about my $1000 camera and wouldn’t be cracking people over the head with it. My glazed eyes must have told a different story. Anyway, he was very polite and non-confrontational both time. Most pleasant bouncer I’ve ever interacted with, outside of the guy that let me and my wife in for free to a sold out White Stripes show a few years ago.

  • It’s cool that Dante’s is down with letting folks take pics at the shows. This includes drunk, shoeless photographers as well. 🙂
