Skate and Annoy: Daily

NYC Mural Blah blah CNN blah bah controversy

A Sofia Maldonado has a mural up in Times Square, NYC that has made some locals hopping mad, although you wouldn’t be able to guess why if you only saw the part we’re featuring here. Sonia is of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. She was also involved in a project called Skate My Patria that brought skateboard equipment donations to Cuba in 2009.

I walked by it today and it’s actually pretty cool. All the shapes are cut as separate pieces so it has kind of a 3D effect. Good spot to do some sk8 footy

  • Serious Goob

Curtis, I’m a friggin expert on mongo PUSHING, so if I want to characterize what she’s doing as mongo STANCE, or rather, “mongo plus” stance, I’ll be my guest. And good art (like bad art) may get people talking, but you hear anyone talking here? Puerile art pleases puerile people, so, feel free to play with Your Little Latina Pony skateboarder in your head… while telling yourself that her board is retro and her shoes are modelled after one of NFL kicker Tom Dempsey’s… or, harden the f up.

  • she did not please too many people. the bottom line is that the art is not that good. figure drawing class is recommended.

  • Vegetable Lasagna

    That broad has Man-Hands.

  • good art gets people talking.
Goob, you don’t know much about mongo. she is doing some freestyle footwork, like “walking the dog” or maybe some of that newfangled longboard over stepping stuff. the board is not a popsicle. it’s a 80’s era freestyle board.

  • All the other chicks had hot outfits & big tits. I object the skater chick should have equally hot clothes too.

  • Prickly Pete

Too late. There was a bloody throw down between the Vespa Squad and some freegan/tall bike enthusiasts. Broken eye glasses and soiled jaunty caps everywhere. Oh the humanity!

  • yeah she should be wearing a helmet, i protest!

  • dude she’s totally throwing up gang signs for the D.U.M.B.O. Hipster Buddies Good Times Vespa Squad! Quick! paint it over or there’ll be an all out Scooter War.. blood on the streets delivered at a neck-breaking 50cc!!

  • I thought she was doing an extreme lipslide.

  • I object to that depiction of a skateboard. And, while I have nothing against “riding mongo” (both feet forward) for comic effect, I do object to “mongo plus” stances (back foot “more than” straight). I think that the protesters’ real objection should be that the mural is puerile.

  • Carl is a dick

    .. from sofiamaldonado.com sorry.

Click ‘blog’ and check out the header image.

  • I’m always running into protests because I don’t depict enough skateboarders who look like Dick Cheney.
