Before punk, a lot of the disaffected were a part of a roots rock and roll scene. Anyone fed up with 70’s excess of prog rock and massive staduim tours went back to the basics of rock and roll, looking to capture a little of the rebellion and fun spirit of the original wave. The Alligators were one such band. The reason this record is called PRe-X Zoom is beacuase Mr Billy Zoom of X fame was in the line up. The fact that there is no real album title and no release credits might be a hint that the Alligators weren’t ready for prime time. It’s not close to X, it’s not punk, it’s not even pure rockabilly. Whether or not you’ll be able to listen to this more than once depends on your appreciation for old school rock, and I mean old, old school. You must realize that 50’s era rock and roll does not equate across the board with rockabilly. There’s not an ounce of pretention or rock star power present here. Pre-X Zoom gives you a glimpse into a time capsule before punk hit critical mass. The low cost of CD duplication, Nirvana, and Green Day have made this possible. I found this CD in Best Buy, for cryin’ out loud.
