What? It’s some 20 years later and Mclsuky has a new album? I had no idea this was out, and I’ve bought things from Christian Fitness before, you’d think Andrew Falkous would have included it in his an email update. (Maybe he did and I skipped reading it.)
I’ve saw a Mclusky lineup on tour in the US a few years ago and it was pretty stellar. There was a new guy on bass and he was fully committed, almost annoyingly so… Still though, highly recommended. I’d go see them again. Conversely, I also say the Sleaford Mods at the same venue. I really enjoyed that show too, but I don’t think I need to see them live again, at least not here in the US.
What about the world is still here and so are we? All lowercase, because that’s apparently the official name of the release. It’s a fine Mclusky album. To my ears they are still a cross between Big Black and the Pixies, and I still dig them. It’s not my favorite Mclusky release, but there are definitely songs that would slot in nicely with a “best of” collection. Some of my favorites includes such gems as unpopular parts of a pig, the battle of los angelsea [sic], people person, the digger you deep, autofocus on the prime directive, and hate the polls. Hilariously, not all steeplejacks at times sounds a little bit like a demented Harry Nilsson’s coconut. At least to me it does, but ignore me*. Hell that’s 7 out of 12 songs. Buy, buy, BUY! One thing a little different about the release is there seems to be a little more of the occasional actual singing, and not the talk-singing, and definitely not the yell-singing. These are some of my favorite moments on the album, partially because they are unexpected.
I give the world is still here and so are we a solid B+, but don’t listen to me, *I’ve been the weak link in every band I’ve ever been in. Hell, I’m the weak link in a one-man band.
