Insert bail out joke here
Say you are watching Fox News, (Please don’t…) and you see some guy on TV and you’re thinking, what a stuffed shirt, there’s no way I could possibly relate to that guy. Well never judge a book… Aw forget it. Michael Morrison was on Fox News today talking about his iPhone app called Bailout Watch, which tracks federal money, blah blah blah. When he’s not appearing on fair and balanced news shows, he can often be found above the heads of locals in a Nashville Franklin, TN skatepark, as seen in this photo from Nick Zierden, who coincidentally knows our own very, very infrequent contributor, Ryan Coulter.
1965 American Skateboard Championships
We’ve posted about this ABC footage before, but the short clip has since been pulled from YouTube. This instance from Google Video is almost a half hour long, and still doesn’t include the other footage. The actual footage is kind of hard to sit through, but the real gem is the audio track. When you get bored watching it, just leave it running in the background so you can listen to the commentary. It’s interesting to note that most of the “champions” are 12-14 years old. There really isn’t any way to tell from the Google page who uploaded this footage, although there are a lot of Burning Flag Press clips on there from the same user, which would lead me to believe it was either Friedman, or a big fan. – Thanks to K.C. for the tip.
Dog day parade
Skateboarding dog float at the Rose Parade! How did I miss this? Oh yeah, I didn’t watch it on TV. This was the battle royale of skateboarding bulldogs, the float featured both Tillman and Tyson the, uh, skateboarding bulldogs… Flickr user theMaykazine actually went there. Skateboarding and religion not mutually exclusive
Funny how often skateboard is used as shorthand for culture clash. Why don’t we ever see a headline like Skateboarder wears a top hat and monocle to get radical?
Gordo the Parrot kidnapped. Budgies suspect
I sat on the story of Gordo the skateboarding parrot, but it blew up after he was kidnapped. I think the prime suspect may be the skateboarding budgies we profiled earlier. Now that they’ve got their own blog, they probably don’t want some parrot on a glorified sled stealing their thunder. It’s called Skateboarding Budgies, but you have to scroll through the most recent posts of them rocking out to get to the pictures and videos of the Budgies on Tech Decks.
I’ll bet it was Hook
A man in Miami took a clue from the Daggers in Thrashin’ and burned down some ramps another man built for the neighborhood kids to skate. Yes, it’s a weak news item titled Man arrested after argument over skateboard ramps ends in flames from the Orlando Sentinel, but a good excuse to post a shot of the Ramp Locals, as found at A Sad Day For Birds.
Aren’t you getting a little old for that?
Famous words from parents, grandparents, and relations everywhere when it comes to skateboarding and/or punk rock, but this time applied to J.F.A. singer Brian Brannon in relation to the headline “JFA frontman knocked unconscious while playing a show in Arizona” – “We were playing the song “Lowrider” and when I sang “The Low-rid-er, he gets a little higher,” I jumped into the crowd and depending on who you ask, I either jumped too far or people moved out of my way,” stated Brannon. “It knocked me out cold and then paramedics arrived to make sure I was OK”. They had to cancel the show, but Brian got back on the horse the very next night. The quote is from a strange press release issued by JFA,s current label DC Jam records. The photo of Brian is from JFA’s current board manufacturer, Factory 13.
Bud Light Lime commercial
Here’s another commercial directed by Ty Evans AKA Skate Fairy, the same guy who did the Nestle Aero commercial with Bob Burnquist. This one is for Bud Light Lime, a product that will likely be nonexistent in two years, but hey, it’s a funny commercial. [Source: Brentter]
Oversized Rob Dyrdek
Rob dyrdek has an obsession with world records. He’s been goofing around with an oversized skateboard for his MTV show Fantasy Factory. At first I thought this was the same board we featured here back in 2007. In fact, it almost looks smaller than the ones the Michigan enginerds built. The guys who built said they had a possible high profile buyer in line, but weren’t allowed to say who. I looks like the trucks are different for sure. The Michigan model was based on Seismic trucks, this one appears to be more conventional. Still, they don’t show the construction phase, they could have easily swapped out the giant trucks… One thing that is interesting, the references make no mention of “world’s biggest,” just greatest. Remember kids, Swank stared this whole thing. While were at it, Drydek has written a skateboarding movie called Street Dreams that is supposed to be released at an unknown date in 2009. The film is already completed, and stars some familiar names like Rob Dyrdek, Paul Rodriguez Jr., Ryan Sheckler, Compton Ass Terry, and Ryan Dunn. The plot is about a Midwest skateboarder trying to go pro, and all the non-flowing parents, bitchy girlfriends, skate harassment…
Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.
In high school I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle. I still do, but I used wake up on school days an hour earlier than I had to, just so I could watch reruns of a cartoon that was already almost 20 years old. The show ran in various formats on network TV from 1959-1973, even though the production stopped in 1964. Syndication followed later. The General Mills corporation was the main sponsor, so it’s no surprise that they used Rocky and Bullwinkle in some advertising. This is from a full page ad from an unnamed comic book that allegedly ran in 1966.
