Part of the landscape

Here’s a flyer for something called the Scion Garage Fest that features the Burnside project for an event that has nothing to do with skateboarding as near as I can tell. Burnside = Portland. CHeck out the whole flyer at the Portland Mercury. – Thanks to GN for the tip.

On the bedtable

I’ve been pouring through these two books lately. The first one is the Disposable Skateboard Bible, which is exactly what it says it is. No great surprise how good this one is, considering how well done the first one was, I wasn’t expecting anything other than excellent, and i wasn’t disappointed. Of particular interest is a wealth of 60’s era decks not covered by anyone else to date with the exception of Rhyn Noll’s disappointing collector’s guide. Disposable even has a red ribbon in the binding that you can use to mark your place in the book, just as fancy editions of the actual Bible do. What I did find surprising is how much I am enjoying Made for Skate. I’m not a sneaker freak by any definition, so I didn’t have high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised by how engrossing it was.

Gator on Home Improvement

Season four of Home Improvement. There’s a Gator board conspicuously placed on the set, looking spotless and unused. ESPN magazine has some sort of feature planned on Vision and Vision Street Wear. They are hitting up the old school bloggers for photos. Paying even. I was going to dig through my archives, but I decided to pass on the basis that I don’t want to contribute to anything that glorifies a company still trying to make money off of a notorious murderer, and one that wishes they would give the royalties away at that. Check out Home Improvement on YouTube until it get’s pulled. It’s from season four, an episode titled “The eyes don’t have it,” circa 1995. The skateboard makes an appearance around the 3:42 mark, but it just sits there, so…. Hold on, that episode is mid 90’s, bso that means that board was sitting around in props for a good 5 years or so before they used it. – Thanks to Jimmy Pills for the tip.

XGames 3D the movie

Opening today at selected theaters and running for a week is XGames 3D the movie. Freestyle motocross, vert BMX, skateboarding, snowboarding and Rally Car driving are featured and there is plenty of gnarly action. There are featured personalities and highlights from last year’s events as well as memorable moments from previous events. Jake Brown and Danny Way’s mega ramp slams are crazy to see on the big screen. I have not seen any of the recent crop of 3D movies. XGames 3D The Movie is a large scale application of the 3D effect but after a while I forgot about it. I probably would have enjoyed it just as much as a normal big screen experience, although you do get a good sense of the scale of the MegaRamp. It was great to see some of the Danny Way milestones, as well as Matt Hoffman’s BMX backflip and the first moto double backflip in competition, presented at that scale. I was quite moved by the Megaramp finale – with Danny Way continuing to compete after a bad slam – even though I had watched the thing whole thing on YouTube a year ago. I’ll rate it better than Harry Potter…

Skateboard Action: They are the “ice skaters”

People who skateboard on ramps are called “vertical skaters.” People who skateboard on anything they can find are called “street skaters.” And people who ride on flat ground only are called “freestyle skaters.” Freestyle skaters are usually the most graceful. They do handstands, jumps, spins, and twirls, often performing planned routines set to music. They are the “ice skaters” of skateboarding. More Skateboard Action from Carl Warren. Thanks human! Enlarge-o-rama! Who is that dude? Previous installments: Six – Five – Four – Three – Two – One

Skateboard Mania on Franklin Mint Blog

I don’t know who this Franklin Mint Blog guy thinks he is, but he’s trampled all over about a weeks worth of posts for me in this entry called Skateboard Mania. He’s got the standards like Farrah, Skateboard, the movie, and the Wonder Woman episode. There’s the less known Stacy Peralta on Charlies Angels, and the even more obscure Jodie Foster movie Foxes, that has some skateboarding in it. He’s got the whole Sneakers and Lace Skateboardin’ USA album ripped from vinyl and ready for download. Well Mr. Smartypants, you missed something. Jodie Foster actually released a pseudo disco single where she kind of talks over a backing track. It’s pretty schlocky, but she mentions a skateboard in it. In any case, he did come up with a old picture of Brooke Shields lounging on a skateboard. I tip my hat to you. Excellent post. Be prepared to spend some time at the Franklin Mint Blog.

America’s Best Skateparks?

If you weren’t paying attention to the Wall Street Journal’s article on how Portland became the skateboarding capital of the world, you might have missed the tab with the interactive graphic that is supposed to display America’s Best Skateparks. The graphic is actully kind of cool, but predictably, you have to take their selection process with a grain of salt, and cringe a little when they show a BMX photo for the illustration of the Athens Ohio skatepark.

How Portland, Oregon Became the Skateboard Capital of the World

How Portland, Ore., Became the Skateboard Capital of the World

The Wall Street Journal want’s you to know that Portland, Oregon is Skateboarding Capital of the World. If only my father were alive to read that. Ruining my life, indeed! As soon as I get home from work tomorrow I’m going to actually read it. I’m up past my bedtime. Holy cow if it isn’t S&A reader and sporadic commenter, Tom Miller in one of the photos. Why can’t we enlarge that one? Where’s that Bush Beater we gave you? And no inside scoop either? Miller, Miller, why have you forsaken us? That’s OK. I’m still voting for you when you run for Mayor. – Thanks to Greg North for the tip.
