Reader Video: 1990’s D.C. Sessions.

Skateboarding footage from the Fairfax and Washington DC area circa 1990:

I had the pleasure of having a great group of friends back in this era of skateboarding. After watching a worn video by HStreet, SMA, or Santa Cruz, we would load up the car, pop in a cassette, hit our favorite spots and skate all day… avoiding cops and jocks. Passing around the camera, we also created videos of one another. Back in 1990 or so on my dad’s VCR in the den, I created the original of this video using some of that footage of myself. Here it is now digitally cleaned up and with better audio. Thanks to my old skate crew: John, Jason, Stew, Mike, Steve, Phil, Matt, Randy, Pat, Chauncey, Paul, Chris, Tony, Jeff, David, Cory, Sean, and Greg. -Dave

You’re Only Young Once

It’s more about the composition than the actual skateboarding, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

How skateboarders’ curves reveal a sculpture space?

Korean artist Koo Jeong-A imagined an art piece integrated in the landscape, which would interfere with its environment and evolve with the light of the day. Her collaboration with l’Escaut architecture studio and Concrete Flow Skateparks along with Doctor Skatepark (formerly known as Brusk Collective) gave birth to a beautiful sculpture, a strong intervention in the territory, and a very tricky park to ride — or as its creators put it, an invitation to “skate the landscape”.
Shot during the opening of the sculpture (celebrated by the 7th edition of the FOSSJ), the film explores the unique artisitic performances of an evolving sculpture and a bunch of old school skateboarders.
