City Hall

The Doctor needs a doctor.

So I broke my jaw (Sunday) and here’s what came out. First Thursday art ramp. The city set this ramp up to help create public awarness for the need for more skate parks. I filmed it. Soundtrack in honor of Conahan’s new skater girlfriend.

Legends of vert.

Legends of vert.

There’s a big vert ramp with Jane’s Addiction playing over the loudspeakers, and guys like Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Chris Miller, Tony Hawk, Duane Peters, Tony Magnussen, Lester Kasai and Steve Steadham are skating. Is this 1987? No, it’s the “Legends of Vert” demo that Steve Steadham organized at the Summer X Games. The real tip off that it’s not 1987 is the almost total indifference registered by the crowd. Brian Baade tipped us off to some video he took from the judges stand.

EA Skate Commercial

Let your little skater out

EA’s upcoming skateboarding video game called Skate (Duh!) is being heralded as a Tony Hawk killer. Not the actual Tony Hawk, but his video game franchise… The idea that it will kill the franchise is slim to none. It could easily be better than the latest version of the Hawk-named game, but they’ll still milk make a few more because It’s firmly entrenched by now. This seems like a good a time as any to bring up Thrasher’s Skate and Destroy game, that unexpectedly fizzled. I mean, what a perfect product tie-in. The game was a good one too. It took a different approach from an art direction standpoint, going for a more stylized look than trying to emulate realism. They had a decent development studio behind it too. Maybe they were a little bit too early. Oh well, I guess everything Fausto touched couldn’t turn to gold. I had kind of stopped collecting and chronicling current skateboarding video game commercials. They are just too prevalent now. This new one for Skate is pretty good though. It’s funny and features some name skaters acting on camera, and doing a good job of it too. The gist of it is that…

GVK# 19: The Skate Ghost

GVK#19: The Skate Ghost

So my buddy and I set on a search for the Skate Ghost along the Oregon coast, although we were one step behind actually sessioning with him, we did capture some of our own footage. Please contact me at this site if you actually see any skate ghost sessioning. Enjoy the show Peace Off Homies.

Jake Brown X-Games Slam

The slam heard ’round the world.

I don’t watch the X-Games, even if I come across them by accident. I know, it’s hard to believe. When I came into work this morning a coworker in his 40’s who doesn’t skate had already emailed me about Jake Browns’s slam to flat on the mega ramp. It’s every vert rider’s worse nightmare, multiplied by 10. That’s right, he fell almost to flat from 15 feet above the coping. How tall are those mega ramps? 20, 30ft? Unofficial word is that he fell about 45-50 ft. It’s sickening to watch, but he actually walked off under his own power 20 minutes later. Jake Brown is the luckiest skateboarder alive on this day. Cringe through the vid after the jump. [Update: Added an alternate, extra gnarly camera angle.] [Update: That was fast! The New York Times has article about Jake’s slam and the inherent dangers of the Mega Ramp. Requires free registration – or read it here]

Grover's Video Korner 18: Holly Farm

GVK#18: Where the hell is everyone?

So here it is, a too long and boring GVK18. It was a slim crowd at Holly Farms for the 1st Saturday, but we had fun as you can see via the video. The average age of the crowd was 30 years of age and the average weight of each person was 200 pounds or more maybe. We finally got “Bacon Master” Collin to ride and boy were we surprised. Who knows, maybe he will ride more with us. I know he is a business man who make tons of money off his skateboarding empire. I also know he is a skater now. It was good to session with him and Tim. Peace OFF Grover

Dew Tour logo

Boring old vert

2007 Dew Tour videos are available from the iTunes Music Store. They have the Panasonic and the Right Guard up so far. You can buy a season pass for $20 which will save you money if you watch more than 10. Vert seems to be in two parts so that could happen. I just finished watching the 2006 final which was a free download. Some really good vert skating. I really enjoyed it.

Screenprinting

Screen printing is horrifying

I had always intended to include video footage with our series of DIY articles on screenprinting skateboards (see bottom pics). Now that I’ve seen the Sistine Chapel of screenprinting videos I can’t see the point of making what will obviously be, an inferior copy of a master’s work. From Aesthetic Apparatus comes this video of the silkscreen process. Although these guys are making posters, it’s essentially the same process used for screen printing skateboards, or screen printing heat transfers. How does this video manage to be educational, annoying, and hilarious at the same time? Watch and find out. [Source: The News]

longest manual

The longest yard

Wheelie. Wheelie. Wheelie. My friend did a manual, and then a nose manual on a ledge which is longer than a football field. The actual distance was 315.21 feet and I found that using Google Earth, I even included a screen shot at the end of the clip for you non-believers. Wheelie. Wheelie. Wheelie. Update: I never said this was the longest, but people keep sending in longer manuals, so I’ve added them after the jump. However, this first video is still (more?) interesting for three reasons: Unlike the others, it’s an ollie to manual. There’s a Google Earth picture of this huge manual pad. The other guys are appear to be rolling downhill.

Tony Hawk interview by Jamie Kennedy

Hawk gets annoyed at E3

A seemingly drunk or otherwise incapacitated Jamie Kennedy interviewed Tony Hawk and his game developer at E3, which is to video games what an eBay convention would be like for skateboard collectors. Jamie is clearly phoning in his performance and bombing, but it’s still pretty funny to watch him take the piss out of all the video game geeks. Also amusing is when Tony Hawk realizes he’s in a bullshit situation and turns it back on Jamie a little. Watch the vid (only if you are bored) after the jump. And while we’re doing video games and skateboarding, if you are truly bored, you can also see a picture of a board someone painstakingly painted with a character from the Legend of Zelda.
