Lucero Gold
John Lucero recently found the original screen from his first pro model on Madrid. It looks ready to pull! I’m surprised it’s to small but then again they could get away with it on those flat boards back then. – Thanks to Jodie at Empty Pools for the tip.
Strummerville tribute
These are skateboards allegedly benefiting the Strummerville foundtation. I say “allegedly” because I can find no mention of them on the official Strummerville site, and the site for Australian-based Blank Skateboards shows the art on flat prints, not skateboards. I actually approached Strummerville about 5 years ago in hopes of releasing a graphic with the royalties going to the foundation, but they never got back to me, and I didn’t follow up. Faux Thiebaud
On this edition of counterfeit board of the month we have a Jim Thiebaud bootleg that surfaced in Portugal on the local equivalent of Craigslist or Ebay, or something, Custo Justo. ON the left is an actual Jim Thiebaud model from SMA, circa 1989. On the right is cheap knockoff. – Thanks to Samuel Silva for the tip.
Bootleg of the week: Freeformer Gator
Spotted on Craigslist, a Free Former board with Gator style graphics. According to Wikipedia, California Free Former went out of business in 1981, which means this is another Frankenstein graphic. I love how the owner put an actual Vision sticker on the top to try and throw everyone off the counterfeit scent. – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip.
Reissue day
These Powell Peralta reissues are just the tip of the iceberg of what Stacy is pushing in connection with the Bones Brigade documentary. A few items are already sold out. I have… mixed feelings about this. I don’t begrudge these guys the right to make a living, but it seems a little excessive and counterintuitive to the legacy. I don’t know if they need the money or not. Maybe they realize their shelf life is limited at this (amazingly) late stage in their careers, so they’re just trying to get one last payoff. Check out the goods.
Mini Murderers
A long time ago, but not that long ago, someone claimed the only reason they were re-releasing the Gator board with “Gator” on it instead of “Vision” (like they originally did the re-issues) because there was a mixup with the old films. A little while later they claimed that Mark “Gator” Anthony never owned the trademark to the “Gator” name so it was ok. So… someone sure is confused about those old films huh? A mini version of your favorite celebrity skater’s pro model. Just the thing to inspire your kids. Available at Select Distribution.
Earache my eye
Tom Penny board on Flip with Cheech & Chong, and the real Cheech & Chong, via Facebook. CSS has a brief interview with the duo regarding their appearance.
Counterfeiting is not a… oh wait, yes it is.
Old News really, but there’s Wired story on a guy who replicates old skateboard graphics whith shapes he has custom made from our friends at Factory 13. Most of those featured in the photos of John Greeley’s collection have been available as rereleases at some point or another. Others like the Mutt and Hawk’s first model that haven’t. Greeley’s reproductions look excellent, and that’s awesome… Until some show up on eBay five years from now in through a chain of events that ultimately ends up with them being passed off as originals. “I may have the largest archive of original deck graphics anywhere.” Either that or you’re the guy who stole Sean Cliver’s laptop full of all the photos and outtakes form Disposable. For the record, I’m not accusing John. I’m just promoting open discussion on reproductions… and being a smartass. – Thanks to Andrew Wahl for the tip.
Jess Kendall
Jess Kendall model, courtesy of an entrepreneur in China and reader Benji Haecker. Jess rode for Stan Cruz, right? If you’re going to counterfeit a board, why not make it an exact copy?
