Trifecta Live Webcast on GO211
GO211.com is doing a live webcast at the Trifecta. Coverage should start at around 12:00 Pacific Standard, according to their man on the scene Mike Estes. You can catch it on their Oregon Trifecta 2009 page. GO211 wins the award for most un-targeted advertising. I got interstitial video ads for dishwashing soap and the U.S. Army before I could watch the Trifecta teaser. On a side note, I’ve heard multiple tales of people heading out to Lincoln City only to find a crappy sign that says “Trifecta Cancelled.” Nice. See ya there! First person to spot Kilwag in the webcast and leave a comment here with what I’m wearing will get a free T-shirt.
Is it still DIY if you didn’t do anything?
Danimal went camping with Shawn F on the coast near Newport, Oregon. I know it sounds kind of gay, but it wasn’t because it was all dudes. Just ask Grover to explain that one… Anyway, the camp site asphalt was pushed up by the roots of a tree looking for water, and it created a little kicker. It looks like kind of gnarly terrain, good thing Danimal had a shortboard with a ridiculous oversized soft wheel and truck combo.
Young guns from Bend
Scott Selover sent in a bunch of pics of some young rippers from Bend, Or. One of them is is son Jake. The other is his friend Dru. Here’s two from Pier Park. These kids are 12 years old. I guess there is a vert scene in Bend. I hear rumors about a 11 foot vert ramp. Did you hear about the 19 year old who landed the 900 at Maloof? These kids have a few years to go…
World Slalom Championships in Hood River
The World Slalom Championships are being held this weekend, July 16th- 18th in Hood River, Oregon. It’s being billed as the biggest slalom event of 2009, yet not one of the sponsors on the press release has any mention of it on their web site. Very odd. In any case, Giant Slalom is on Friday. Saturday is qualifying and prelim rounds for the Tight and Hybrid Slalom events. Sunday is the finals. About the only other information I have is that the poster was made by Jim Phillips. Slalom is fun. International Slalom Skateboard Association Seismic Skate Systems – Thanks to Skip Marcotte for the tip.
Sometimes it takes 25 years
I was perusing the back issues of Thrasher (yes, perusing…) when I found MC in the April, 1984 issue of Thrasher. It’s the Photograffiti section. It includes a paragraph where Mark (AKA Max Concave) talks about a ramp some surfers built here in Oregon, and laments about the lack of initiative shown by skaters. Well, 25 years later MC finally remedied the situation. Check it out after the jump… or I suppose you could actually read it at the Thrasher site. Gee whiz, don’t those High Speed Publications guys realize they are putting hundreds of nostalgia skateboard bloggers out of their imaginary, non-paying jobs? Seriously though, that is the MO of a lot of skate blogs out there, scan some old ads or features from the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s, and then reminisce. I’m not knocking them, because I do it all the time.
Roll-in Challenge 2009
I was stoked on seeing last year’s roll in challenge, so I expected an invite if it ever happened again. Geez, what’s a fellow gotta do to be popular on the Skateboard Interwebs around here? I’ve even got a spot lined up. PDX Downhill has the photos and a rather long-ish video from this year’s participants. They start out on some mellow stuff but graduate to some gnarly spots. On second thought, I don’t know if could hang… Aside from the roll in footage, there’s also some good old fashioned street skating. Looks like it was a damn fun way to spend Go Skateboarding Day, or any other day. Check it out. – Thanks to last week’s SOTW, Casey Morrow for the tip.
Oregon Trifecta 2009 dates and 2008 wrap up.
The 2009 dates for the 2009 Oregon Trifecta have been up for a while. The big surprise this year is the addition of two extra days of qualifying events, bringing the grand total up to five consecutive days of skateboarding contests. So it’s official, event organizers are definitely trying to kill me! The web site is mum, so I’m not exactly sure why the extra qualifying days have been added. I would have guessed it was to make the big three days shorter, but the schedules posted don’t reflect that. Also very interesting, this year marks a return to Pier Park (!) a fan favorite, and once again it’s an all Oregon event. Qualifiers on August 5th and 6th at West Linn (It’s been a long time…) and Tigard, respectively. The main events are at Lincoln City, Oregon on Friday, August 7th, Tigard, Oregon on Saturday, August 8th and Portland’s Pier Park on Sunday, August 9th. There’s a little over a month to go, so I’ve rounded up 2008 Trifecta coverage from all points, after the jump. If I missed your coverage, let me know and I’ll add it.
When visiting Lincoln City…
On my recent return trip to Lincoln City to retrieve my camera, I stuck around to skate a little and met Race, who was on a road trip from Missoula Montana, and enjoying the fine Oregon concrete. Here he is on his way down the giant snake run. Bonus bail after the jump.
If you are skateboarding, you are trespassing
I saw this little gem behind the outlet malls in Lincoln City, Oregon this weekend. Now I’m only disappointed in myself that I didn’t investigate how easy it would have been to add this to the permanent Kilwag collection. But then again, not the sort of thing you’d want to do with a sleeping toddler in the car. This might be my favorite no skateboarding sign of all times. You have to dig the no nonsense approach. Click to enlarge. UPDATE: just added another beauty of a sign from the same location, from reader John Drummond.
Shot of the Week 6-22-09: Downhill bomb
This week’s Shot of the Week is Casey Morrow bombing a hill in the Dalles, Oregon, on something called the Skyline. Holy cow, it’s a guy on an extended wheelbase skateboard doing downhill on Skate and Annoy. Guess what haters, it’s all SKATEBOARDING! This is a cropped version of Carl Warren’s original photo. Check out the full frame Shot of the Week.
