Skate and Annoy: Daily
May Day Moscow spot check
In honor of May Day, I thought I ‘d post some sweet granite benches in Moscow. CLick through to get a a wider view of this Russian street skating spot.
Crest Spinbrush skateboard toothbrush
This is pretty underwhelming, the wheels don’t even spin. I do have a couple other skateboard-themed products from the realms of personal hygiene marketing that are coming in the next couple of days that are definitely more interesting. Until then, here’s the Spinbrush. – Thanks to Mrs Kilwag for the tip.
Awesome Show, Great Job
The Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is one of those programs that you either love or hate. Always low budget, it’s like one of those cable network comedy sketch shows, only it’s actually really funny, and at times very surreal. It’s on Adult Swim, so that ought to give you a good idea of what to expect. This video is an excerpt from a parody of MTV style “youth programming” called the “Jim and Derrick Show,” and it’s shot at a skatepark. Hit the ramps! – Thanks to Daniel Evans for the tip.
Greetings from Panama
Insert Van Halen reference here. Skater: Mirlo Trick: Rock to fakie on a street barrier Where: Panama, Central America. Photo: Jerzick Oliveros Thanks to Milorad Vardic for sending it in. You can see the full frame shot plus a bonus street sequence after the jump.
SOTW 4-27-09: Jim Gray at Whittier Skate City
This week’s Shot of the Week is from Jim Gray, pictured at Skate City in Whittier, CA. This shot was used for his first advert ever, which was in Action Now magazine, circa 1980 or so. He can’t remember who took it, and I can’t seem to find it in the couple of Action Now’s that I have access to. So maybe our readers can help. I’m working on putting together an interview with Jim, so if anyone has any questions they’d like me to consider, go ahead and email them to me. Check out the Shot of the Week.
Los Super Juniors in Mexico
I found this Mexican comic book, Los Super Juniors over at Weirdo Toys. And speaking of Mexican skateboarding, check out this video from Steven Bailey found at the Mercava Skateboards. It’s got spots from different states in Mexico, including the one where tipster John Aguilar learned to skate tranny when he was a Super Junior. It’s a super rough looking the banked ditch/half pipe thing in Mexico city behind the Corona beer brewery. Look for it at about 2:38 into the vid. 2023 Update: Follow me down a rabbit hole while I try to track down Mexican comic books.
Burnside history in pictures
The official web site for the Burnside Project is kind of a mess, hosted on two separate Blogspot accounts, and hard to read and find your way around. If anyone needs/wants help rebuilding the site, consider this my formal offer to do it, pro bono of course. On the plus side, there is a bit of written history that is a work in progress, going back and getting things right is a daunting task. The best part is an old section with a wealth of tiny pictures of various stages of Burnside, mostly from Kent Dahlgren, going way….. back. It looks like it was made back in the modem days, cause the images are pretty small, but still they are an amazing resource. Check out Burnside Photoview.
S is for Street, Skating and Stairs
A cool illustration by Alex Trochut from Type Theory. They link to his site where you can buy some of his stuff but unfortunately not this. Hmm, I wonder if I could knock off a vert skating version?
Eagles and chickens
You can look at this picture of some sort of anti KFC protest by PETA, or you can watch some video footage of Peter Hewitt dressed up as an eagle in the 88 footwear Destroy Everything video. There’s also a short and boring interview with Tony Hawk (not his fault) from FHM magazine where he briefly talks a bout doing the loop in a chicken suit for Jackass. Your choice. – Thanks to Seth Grossman for the tip
Dokument Reopening party
Dokument Skate Shop is having a grand reopening on May 2nd, at their new location on 2320 Commerical St. in Salem, OR. I asked Kevein Porterfield for a little eye candy to liven up this post for those of you who don’t live in the area. I’ve got three shots of two team riders, both named Gabe, plus the flyer after the jump. Guess how many stairs in that set up top and win absolutely nothing but a smug sense of satisfaction.
