Skate and Annoy: Daily
Doot Doola Doot Doo Doot Doo!
Nardwuar the Human Serviette had a guest DJ Roger Allen on his radio show to present the history of Skate Rock. It’s was an entertaining show to be sure, but I think Roger confused Skate Rock with music that a lot of skateboarders listen to. He started off on a high note with a soundtrack clip from the 60’s film Skater Dater, and a few good skatesploitation tracks from the 70’s before getting derailed by Led Zepplin, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and a bunch of other bands that certainly were listened to by a lot of the skating population, but can hardly be considered authentic “skate rock,” Bad Brains included. It’s something I’d actually enjoy getting into a scholarly debate about with Allen. It’s a good listen anyway. 80’s centric but bookended by decades on both sides. Check out Nardwuar vs. Roger Allen. I love Nardwuar. – Thanks to Dale Pidlisny for the tip. [Photo: William R. Jans]
Tony Hawk on Phineas and Ferb
I was not a fan of Phineas and Ferb when I first saw it. I think it was the animation style and color pallet made it seem kind of cheap. My kids are into it though, and like any lazy American good parent I watch a lot of TV monitor what my children watch to make sure it’s appropriate. I’ve since grown to appreciate it. Phineas and Ferb have a spin off now called Phineas and Ferb: Take Two. It’s essentially the same premise as Space Ghost Coast to Coast, a virtual set and hosts with real guests. Space Ghost Coast to Coast is one of the most brilliant shows ever put on late night TV, so Phineas and Ferb has a tough act to follow. I’ve only seen the one episode, and it falls flat. Part of what made SGC2C work was the general weirdness of the situation. Some of the guests didn’t quite know what was going on, and the writers occasionally deliberately created a semi hostile atmosphere. At it’s best, Space Ghost Coast to Coast was a bizarre masterpiece of postmodern awkwardness. Then again, Phineas and Ferb is aimed at a grade school audience, so maybe I…
Breakboard
YouTube says it’s a “Cool New Sport” and I think it’s legit. I mean “legit” as in it’s not supposed to be a joke. New Cool…! New Sport! New Challenge! New Image! The perfect blend of Street Dance and Skateboarding.Lifting the “BreakBoard “develop muscles and strengh. The patented”BreakBoard is an innovative 2N1 skateboard product designed for a new generation of talented athletes with a safe and “FunFitness”way to express their potential creative genius. This board literally mates old exercise-craze “technology” with a skateboard. Along with pulleys on doorknobs, and later on Thigh-Masters, another exercise device pawned off on the fat and lazy American public was a simple turntable device that allowed you to do the twist in place without… I don’t know, excess friction in the balls of your feet. Jessie L. Drummer decided to put one on a skateboard to “fight obesity and stress” and engage in some excellent break dancing. – Thanks to Bobcat for the tip.
GVK #63: Pete Schweddy – Burnside 2011
I have renewed my Burnside skatepark membership and frequent it often. Well on this particular day it was Pete Schweddy A.K.A Alec Baldwin. Even tho the action was low it was a heated tech session until Boo-ya showed up and the big bowl started to getting some action. Enjoy the music of Eduard Khil a Russian a crooner. The Name of the song is Trololo. Which Kinda means (Watching the Cowboys come home). Which in 1976 was illegal to sing in Russia. “Pete Schweddy” Burnside 2011
SOTW 1-23-11: Jamie Jacobson
Holy cow! I know, right, it’s amazing that I’ve actually updated the Shot of the Week two weeks in a row… Yuck yuck yuck. What’s amazing is that this kid (Young adult?, Seasoned veteran?) Jamie Jacobson apparently has this move down pat and isn’t bothered by hitting it without shoes. This capsule face carve is as Dave Duncan would say (over and over) “no joke.” Thanks to Dabe Alan again for the photo. I had to include the oversized enlargement for this one. I need to kick up the Shot of the Week anyway, it’s still set at a 2003 bandwidth.
Merde’s Shit Sandwich
Is this Sponsor Luv? I don’t know, but it is a video from Merde titled Shit Sandwich.
Blackriver Bowl, Bavaria
You may remember Blackriver as associated with expensive fingerboard trucks, but they skate life sized terrain as well in Bavaria. (Now it make sense that $75 fingerboard trucks come from the land of BMW.) Photo sets on Flickr, or catch some vid after the jump. – Thanks to Martin Ehrenberger for the tip.
