Coming out of the closet: UPDATED

That’s right S&A readers. I’m taking this opportunity to bravely throw off the shackles of oppression and let everyone know that I… Well, how do I put this? I like Ellen Degeneres. OK, her TV show doesn’t appeal to me but as a stand up performer and showbiz personality, I’m a fan of her. Ellen had Tom Schaar (no relation to Max Schaaf) on her TV show shortly after landing his 1080. Ellen’s is a bit out of her element, and it’s not a very interesting segment, but at least Tom got a few minutes of fame. Whoever came up with the idea of a mini-mega ramp for a live TV segment should be demoted. There’s nothing that makes for more exciting TV than watching a kid trudge up a ladder a minute for each second he actually spends on his skateboard. Fortunately, Ellen pulls shouts out a bunch of random skate terminology while this is happening.

UPDATE: Tom landed a 1080 X Games Asia in Shanghai, China, beats Burnquist. Video after the jump.

Psychic… Powerless…

last Monday we had a rude awakening with Off!. So it is in that tradition that I present this cartoon and apologize for greeting you with part of a Buthole Surfer’s album title. I guess that really wasn’t a way to make it any more palatable. The cartoon was found on an image aggregating site with no credits or source. It looks like it came from an adult magazine. Perhaps it was scanned by someone who lures less skillful players into competing against them at a gambling game. I thought I might have posted it already, since I remember seeing it quite a while back, but I couldn’t find it here on S&A. So the gag is, old people acting like teenagers! Hilarious.

Drew Barrymore keepin’ it real

Drew Barrymore was photographed at a skatepark in Culver City, California for the February, 2012 issue of InStyle. Here she is yucking it up with one of the locals. Scans provided by what I have to assume is a 15 year old boy, at least judging by the rest of the pictures I’ve found tagged with Kroqjock.

Off: Wiped Out.

From Friday’s disco we segue int the soothing sounds of Off! It’s Monday and I want to make sure everyone starts the work week “off” on the right foot. Skateboarding footage included, so its rad and relevant.

Kellee Patterson: Turn on the lights

The music in Kellee Patterson’s Turn on the lights has nothing to do with skateboarding. It’s pure 70’s disco soul, representative of the genre and when it came out, which was 1977. But checkout that rocket board! I’ve seen plastic six wheelers before, but never in that configuration. Now that I have a few other weird ones collecting dust in my basement I have a new unholy grail to search for. It might be difficult, considering I have no idea what that board is called. I do know approximately where to find that record though. My weekend is getting cluttered.

Friday T&A on S&A: Action Sportsploitation

What’s that you say? Time to class up the joint with gratuitous topless pics of girls “modeling” action sports clothes? Head on over to Vice. The best part (well…) is when they list the clothes that the model is wearing, which is a little comical on the shots that are cropped so close to the boobs that you can’t really see the clothes. Babes on Wheels. Action Sportsploitation.

Element Case not Element Skate

Element Case (no relation) is releasing a handful of new iPhone cases with skate graphics on them. It’s basically one of three different cases with what are essentially removable hard plastic (lexan) stickers on the outside. Base prices range from $40 to $150 (!!!) depending on how high tech you want it. The more expensive ones actually look better (tip to tail, not truck to truck) but who has $100-$150 to blow on a case for a phone? Not me, dear readers. They do look nice though, and who would have guessed Pineapple Designs would have been one of the offerings? I’m still patiently waiting for the call from the lucky manufacturer who wants to license Skate and Annoy designs. How about a nice iPad case with a giant GVK face on the back? I wonder if Staab is sharing Tony hawk’s business manger. Seems like he’s got more product out now then he ever did in his heyday. Wait, maybe this is his heyday. Speaking of heyday… Holy Frank! It’s Billy Ruff in the product video? I haven’t heard anything about him in ages. (Wait.. I’m still watching.) An appearance by Brad Bowman and Steve Caballero too, plus manufacturing shots. There’s footage of the manufacturing process and a visit to the Powell factory. Ironically, the iPhone case stickers are direct screened and the Powell process shown involves heat transfers.

Zoolander

I hear they are making a sequel to Zoolander. I don’t remember seeing this from the first time around. The sport sandals make this look. If it had been made a few years later they would have used a longboard.

Birds, bees, and bones

Pay attention in school kids. You never know when things might get interesting. This is a random slide from a biology lecture that Billy Bones attended. I don’t know what’s more messed up, the skater’s wacky shape or his massively receding hairline. It’s also kind of creepy that the only fully opaque figure is a girl in a bikini.

Front side Barack and roll

As disappointed as I am with his term, I was ready to believe this for half a heart beat. This video is fake, but pretty well done. Come on Obama, get some for cryin’ out loud…
