SK8 TV, while supplies last
UPDATE: This post dates back 2013 and a lot of the content and comments have to to with Skatemaster Tate (Gerry Hurtado) who didn’t really have an internet presence at the time. Gerry did eventually surface in the online skating world through social media (actually commenting on this site too) as well as having a skateboard released through Flood Control and a flexi-disc release in an issue of Pure Fun. Sadly, within a week of being diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer, he passed away on October 13th, 2015.
I’ve been sitting on some recorded rebroadcasts of SK8 TV from around the turn of the millennium. I’ve been hesitant to post them online because I figured between Viacom and Stacy Peralta, I wasn’t in a hurry to get kicked off of Youtube again. In my head, these belong to the 80’s but according to IMDB, the first air date was in 1990. SrArcade has a channel and blog mostly dedicated to restoring and playing old video arcade games, but he’s also uploaded a healthy chunk of the old Nickelodeon show. There are 51 uploads to date, each a segment instead of a whole episode, but all of them are included in one playlist for easy viewing. It looks like his masters are a lot cleaner than my VHS dubs – dubbed to digital 8, and then again to mini DV – that’s how long I’ve been sitting on them! Nickelodeon has made some of their vintage shows available for download in the iTunes store, but SK8 TV wasn’t one of them. I wonder if Stacy was shrewd enough to be able to retain the copyright on these episodes. If not, why they aren’t being rebroadcast or sold as a DVD set? That show was corny as heck, but it had it’s moments, and nostalgia sells. I’d look forward to watching the hell out of SK8 TV on the couch with my kids on a Saturday morning. SrArcade has had some of these up for a year, so maybe they’ll last. If not there’s another guy selling individual episodes as a download. Say hello to Matthew Lillard and Skatemaster Tate.
Stay safe kids
Hey kids, the weekend’s almost here, so I want all you S&A readers to stay safe. We all know that wiping out is no fun, so you have to be prepared just in case. To that end, please watch this Aetna Insurance TV commercial on safety that dates back to 1978. A good helmet and a snazzy set of gloves and pads never goes out of style. Video courtesy of the miraculously-still-allowed-on-youtube Scott Starr. Remember, there’s a key to staying safe and having fun: Never ride in the street, and always whistle a catchy tune.
Hawk and Koston on the Aquabats Super Show
Tony Hawk and Eric Koston had brief cameos hamming it up on the Aquabats Super Show season 2 premier. Gotta love the Aquabats. The show is a fun one. Like a low budget cross between the Monkeys and Ultraman.
Denver the Last Dinosaur
Denver the Last Dinosaur is possibly one of the best bad cartoon relics out there. Basically, a dinosaur egg hatches, and hangs out with kids skateboarding, riding BMX and sort of communicating in a more subdued Scooby Doo style. The animation is horrible, I swear it approaches 5 frames a second. The voiceover is what makes this cartoon enjoyable/eardrum piercing. The character actors are awful. It’s like listening to somebody do a really bad impersonation Jeff Spicoli, for 20 minutes… The series started in 1988 and ran for two years, so that was right at the tail end of the California craze. There’s an episode called Venice Beach Blast where part of the gang gets hassled for skating on the bike path. The authority figure (Is he a cop or a security guard? He looks like a Forest Ranger.) explains that the community got the signatures together to get skating banned and the bike path built. Now you think this would would turn into a civics lesson that ends with a skateboard park being built, but it doesn’t. The skaters in the crew turn against their biking brothers and go renegade. There’s a lot of whining (almost life real life), radical moves and slams. The whole thing wraps up in about 30 seconds with an explanation of some action that happened off camera. Basically, the city lets the kids skate in part of an unused parking lot, and everyone is happy. It’s massively weak, but the script and character actors make it entertaining, like a train wreck. Video, promotional stills and sarcasm after the jump.
– Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip.
Fellow kids
From season 6 of 30 rock, Steve Buscemi as Lenny Wozniak going undercover in a high school, for reasons I can’t remember It’s episode 8, titled “The Tuxedo Begins.” These screen grabs come from multiple sources. Another picture after the jump that an excellent addition, he’s not just carrying one skateboard. 30 Rock has showed skateboards a couple times over the years and mentioned Tony Hawk at least once.
Burnside: Not quite gentrified.
PORTLAND – Officers arrested a suspect after a man was stabbed at the Burnside Skatepark late Friday evening, police said. Just before 10:30 p.m., a man was stabbed in the leg after getting in a verbal altercation while skating under the Burnside Bridge on Southeast 2nd Avenue, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police arrested 29-year-old Jeremy Moore Friday night and booked him in the Multnomah County Jail on first-degree assault charges.

News Flash:
Skateboarding no longer Extreme!™
I just saw this Red Bull commercial on TV sunday night, and couldn’t help but noticed they covered everything except the glring omission of skateboarding. I mean, they had down hill ice skating races for the love of Hosoi. I don’t know whether to laugh with joy or weep. Oh yeah, on second look, there doesn’t appear to be any snowboarding either. But again, they’ve got “Ice Cross” and parkour.
Let’s make A Deal!
Daymond Dodge snapped these pics off his TV. He happened to catch Let’s Make A Deal with host Wayne Brady. A Zonk prize? Now way! Who wouldn’t want a skateboarding gorilla? Even if you couldn’t keep the guy in the monkey suit, that’s the sweet spot for novelty oversized skateboards. This type of video is worth it’s weight in gold to a historian/connoisseur such as myself, so if anyone caught it on tape, please share the wealth. CBS has full episodes on the web, but Daymond caught this on the 28th of December, and they don’t have any from that date. I think it’s a repeat.
Woodward on Millionaire
Screen snap from a recent Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Camp Woodward as the subject of one of the questions. Wow, a fly box? no way. I’ve never seen one in person. Har, har. If anyone caught this on video let me know please.

Stacy Peralta on George Stroumboulopoulos
Almost 11 minutes of Stacy Peralta being interviewed by George Stroumboulopoulos. Well, 7 minutes once you get past the intro. Nothing earth shattering or new, for that matter, but not boring actually. Worth it just to watch the brief exchange about the Hollywood and the Lords of Dogtown at around 9:30. BTW, there’s another round of Bones Brigade memorabilia/paraphernalia, most of it is sold out.
