SOTW 5/31/10: South Africa
This week’s Shot of the Week is an excuse to link to Michael Goetz’ gallery of skate photos from his ongoing residence in South Africa. He’s been there for about five months. Aside from visiting family, he’s working on planning the first bowl in Cape Town. Check out his South Africa gallery, or head on down to the Shot of the Week.
Gratuitous Eye Candy
[wp-cumulus] Check out this fancy 3D tag cloud. Equal parts impressive and annoying, huh? If you are struck with the desire to view this after it’s been bumped from the front page, you can find the link labeled Fancy Tag Cloud in the sidebar. Oh yeah, without Flash installed it just looks like the regular 2D tag cloud.
Hoverboard brought to life
Before you get too excited, although it is technically “real,” it’s just maglev technology, you know, electromagnets that you can buy off the shelf, provided you go to the right store. This hoverboard only works on the platform that houses the electromagnets, and while it can carry some weight, it’s not near powerful enough to hold a human. A clever and fun demonstration of a simple idea, really. The creator Nils Guadagnin says there are also lasers involved to help balance, but I’m not sure how or why they are needed. Video after the jump. – Thanks to Concretin Nik for the tip.
Cameras at risk
I found this on the Chase Jarvis blog after getting distracted while researching DIY steadicams. I thought to myself, “That sure looks like the Kent, Washington skatepark,” and I was right. This was a commercial shoot, but for what? At first I thought Chase Jarvis was the annoying dude in the video, but I think it’s the name of a firm. These guys have their web marketing down pat. I believe I saw them highlighted on the Apple site in relation to iPhone photography. Watch Cameras at Risk after the jump.
Friday T&A on S&A: Teach Me!
I’ve heard it involves “fun boxes” of a sort. Full cover after the jump. NSFW. – Thanks to anonymous pervert for the tip!
Lucky Fellows
As found on the Fellows page of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, whose mission is to “bring together visual artists, writers and musicians from around the world who demonstrate exceptional talent and an enduring commitment to their disciplines.” There is no accompanying information about the location. The foundation’s headquarters is in New York, but the residency is located in Italy. It almost looks like you can see some wheel marks on those transitions. Too bad they are sitting on grass. Stupid art… – Thanks to Skate D for the tip.
When vague copyright infringement isn’t enough
Kids have beds. Kids need sheets. Kids love Spiderman. Kids love skateboarding. Kids love cheap imported home goods from manufacturers that aren’t concerned with copyright infringement or having an art director with a fully formed idea. Seeing this picture with all the clashing pop culture characters makes me fear for my kid’s psyche.
L.A. Skate FIlm Festival deadline approaching
Two weeks left to get your video finished up and submitted to the Los Angeles Skate FIlm Festival. Hammer Surf had one here in Portland what seems like five years ago. I don’t think they ever dod a second one. The festival organizers seem to be in it for the long haul. They even created something called The Academy of Skateboard Filmmakers, which would seem laughable were it not for some of the names on the board which include Stacy Peralta, CR Stecyk III, J. Grant Brittain, Greg Hunt, Ed Templeton, Ricky Bedenbaugh, Bryce Kanights, Jamie Thomas, Mike Manzoori, Fred “French Fred” Mortagne and Ty Evans. Sure, I don’t know who some of those guys are, but overall it seems like very credible choices. June 9, 2010 is the deadline. Details on the official web site.
A momentary loss of muscular coordination
I had a lapse of judgement, I made some bids I couldn’t back up. Like that time in 8th grade when I almost got stuck paying $60 for a cake at that Boy Scout charity bake auction. These Skatewings are freakish and rare. Just try finding one with a Google image search. Brewce Martin owns one. I was upset at first, but then I realized that eBay bidder Member Id: o***b must be a fan of the site and intend to send it to me as payment for countless hours wiled away reading Skate and Annoy, right? RIGHT!
Double your fun
While I applaud the simulation of the wide angle lens, (The artist is really in touch with skateboarding!) I feel the need to suggest that Jesus could use a bottle of Nair, or maybe he shouldn’t have shaved his legs in the first place. Hand-holding at the skatepark? I’m ambivalent. Guy curious? [Souce: Pleated-Jeans] – Thanks to Ben Reese for the tip.
