Give a Hoot
Woodsy Owl was/is the mascot of the US Forest Service. He had his own comic book from 1973-1976. Here he is getting down with some 8 wheeled action in issue #4 from 1973. There are no other skateboard stores inn this issue. [Source: Retrogasm]
Hows about a nice Hawaiian Punch?
Hawaiian Punch iron on transfer. The seller says it appears to be from the 80’s but that doesn’t look like 80’s era iron transfer technology to me. I’m thinking closer to mid to late 90’s. UPDATE: Added pics of an 80’s era Hawaiian Punch skateboard. UPDATED UPDATE: This board came up in discussion in the S&A Facebook group and coming back to this 2012 era post with 2012 era low res graphics was embarrassing. Added some better pics of the board from a 2021 auction. And because it was Josh Baker that brought it, up an image search also turned up his 2013 post of the t-shirt transfer that has much better pics.
At long last
Skateboards made from laminated, recycled skateboards. They probably aren’t going to win any “pop” contests, but how can you argue against this one? It’s faultless. Iris Skateboards are made by George Rocha, who among other things worked on the Dreamland crew for a while. [Source: ESPN] – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
Deck Stool # 2
I’ve featured Deckstool way back in 2008, but they’ve added new designs since then, and it’s worth it because how often do you get to use “#2” and “Stool” in the same post title? I’m pretty sure this is not how they envisioned their publicity opportunity.
R.I.P. Reggie
Reggie Destin, killed by a drunk driver while skateboarding in a bike lane. He died from his injuries last Saturday. I didn’t know him personally, but I knew Push, and I hail from Chicago (ages ago) so I feel for you Chicago. There’s a fund set up to help his family pay for his medical expenses.
Burnside Blank Slate
Grover stopped by Burnside earlier today (Tuesday) and got some shots of Jay Meer and another preparing Burnside for it’s 22nd anniversary Halloween debut. I wonder if he’s down there painting via generators now. GPK after the jump. That’s Grover’s Picture Korner.
Powell Street benefit
Powell Street skatepark benefit in Portland. Neighborly forces are mobilizing. Plan B is the venue, Skate rock and skate vids are the plan. Shrunken Heads is the sponsor. Portland’s skatepark system has definitely stalled, gone into hibernation even, but it seems that we’re gearing up for the second great push.
Boy’s Life
Taking time off from their many pursuits like discriminating against homosexuals and covering up sexual abuse, the Boy Scouts of America have helpful tips for fixing slow skateboards. As a former Eagle Scout (Once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout!) I am seriously considering my options.
Wheel Shields mean well
Swear to Glob I saw these before somewhere but I can’t place it now. These Wheel Shields are supposed to prevent wheelbite and, I don’t know, mud splatters on you new kicks? These are pre-release photos. No web page and gasp, no Kickstarter either! Just a lowly old Facebook page. Update. There is a web site, but with a different name. Marketing message needs focus guys! – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip.
