Spohn ranch LA street plaza to Guantanamo Bay

Insert torture joke here

If they are going to build skateparks in Iran, have outreaches in Afghanistan, what’s next, Guantanamo Bay? YES! I don’t know if the presidential shaka is responsible or not, but Sphon Ranch is going to build a bowl and a wedge bank (like the one seen above) in Guantanamo Bay. The “Morale Office” is bringing in some pro skaters for a demo, and they want them to have concrete to skate on. Spohn has been given exactly one week to get the whole thing finished, so there’s really no other way to do it. Pre-fab concrete can’t be beat in a situation like this. No word on who the pro team is, but let’s hope they bring some extra boards for the Subvert Cuba project. While we’re talking about Spohn Ranch, let’s revisit the LA Street Plaza and check out a new Brownsville, Tx skatepark that just opened. I have to warn you, there’s a video after the jump that may start playing automatically. I’m warning you because it’s NSFA, or “Not safe for agnostics,” as in it’s from an organization called SkateBible and as such features some bad Christian folk music and a little gratuitous use of the G-word. Also, after reloading the page a couple times, an advert started playing as well, without allowing me to turn down the volume. Come on Transworld, get your Netiquette act together.

Here’s the video of the LA Street Plaza in action. You may remember there was some discussion here about the usability of the layout, specifically with the center island taking up so much space. From the video it looks like the park and obstacles are a lot of fun, although you can clearly see a few examples of the space limitations becoming a problem. That half moon bank does look fun though. There are a few more photos in a Spohn ranch Flickr stream.

Still here? Here’s a video form the opening of the Brownsville texas skate park grand opening, another one of Spohn Ranch’s recent projects.

  • That was fuckin great, thanks kilwag.

  • Just say no to theocracy…even skate theocracy.
Nothing against religion here, I’m a very liberally religious Hindu myself, but the theocratic Jesus freaks trying to turn skateboarding into a religious jihad is bizarre.
Hinduism makes more sense with skating…karma literally means “action”, and if you don’t plan your ride(action) right, suddenly saying “well, I meant to do what Jesus did” isn’t going to save you from snapping your femur after the fact.
    What’s done is done.
You need to act in a way that won’t break your femur from the get go…
Nothing against Jesus, and certainly nothing against Christ(Hosoi be thy name)…just, you know, “get the moneychangers out of the temple”, and “render unto Dogtown that which is Dogtown’s”…y’know?
    ..damn beer..
