Jeebus Meme

I don’t know what the caption means, and of course, there’s no context or credit for the original over at Memebase.com. It’s Jesus H. Christ on the original (sin) wackyboard.

It’s hard to tell from the article but I think this skate church set up is an annual event that last for a short period of days and not a permanent fixture in the Malmesbury Abbey that was more or less built by 1180 A.D.. Sure, the heating bill is a bit steep, but look at that view.. Location, location, location. Insert real estate joke here, wait, are didn’t I just use them all? But seriously, what an interesting venue. The event was secular, more of a community outreach than proselytizing scenario. Come for the skateboarding, stay for the architecture.

At first I thought this was typical media stereotyping of skateboarders, until I watched the video of the guy who actually said it. A skateboarder foiled one of the nutjobs who was going to burn the Quaran in a public park in Amarillo, Texas. I applaud the positive vibes, although I also recognize the nutjob’s First Amendment right to burn the Quaran, or any other book or national flag, provided he does so in a safe manner. Maybe you should get a permit to do that, like the Nazi’s did in Skokie. Speaking of fire, I was at the Smokejumper visitor center in Missoula, Montana recently. I highly recommend it, fascinating stuff, but the point is, during the tour I observed that some smokejumpers, aside from being gnarly dudes (and gals) doing burley, dangerous work, they are also into street skating, the Misfits, and of course, longboards.
- Thanks to… everybody and their brother who sent this in.

I got a hundred tips about this skateboarding priest (right), all of which I failed to follow up because I assumed it was the two guys on the left that I had squirreled away for a while, no idea where I originally found it, but it’s could easily have been here. So here it is, a wacky Hungarian priest who obviously spent some time on the board before he was ordained. How about the Morman Church trying (on some level) to be hip? They’ve got a well done video featuring a guy named Josh Maready talking mostly about skateboarding, and a little bit about the Mormon church. He’s so articulate and normal that he almost makes Mormans seem cool, or at least sane. Check it out on Mormon.org. and because the heads in SLC doesn’t believe in allowing embedded video, I’m going to add a 2006 video of an Australian reverend cussing out some skateboarders in front of a church. He ended up resigning in 2007.

Just another skate church, so I wouldn’t normally feature it were it not for the fact that this one is youth led, and well, this horribly awkward photo they used to illustrate it. Actually, as far as skate photos go, it blows. But if you look at the enlargement, something about the guy in the background watching this kid flail is appealing. Read about it in the Seattle Times.

While I applaud the simulation of the wide angle lens, (The artist is really in touch with skateboarding!) I feel the need to suggest that Jesus could use a bottle of Nair, or maybe he shouldn’t have shaved his legs in the first place. Hand-holding at the skatepark? I’m ambivalent. Guy curious?

I like to thank people who send in tips, and include a link for them if they have one. I curse Stephen Slappe for sending me this tip. I’ll never get back all the time I wasted researching this. The clip that’s making the rounds is from Everything is Terrible, a web site that is like watching Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job, only with real footage. Colby the Computer googlizes into a thousand references to Colby’s Clubhouse, a Christian children’s show with a talking, evangelizing computer. However, episode guides omits this gem of a clip. In fact, the only time “skateboard” shows up is in another episode called “Helping the Missionaries,” where a kid wants people send him money so he can buy a skateboard. Colby’s Playhouse ran from 1995 to 2000, but this rapping freestyle-filled episode is definitely 80′s, and has an entirely different production value than every Colby’s Clubhouse. Everything is Terrible is all about the video without explanation or insight. Terribly entertaining, but frustrating if you want the back story. It was maddening trying to find this episode, but eventually the explanation turned up on totalschwarr! This is an episode of Colby’s Place, titled Skateboard for Sale. It features freestyle “legend” Andre Walton. I have to be honest, I didn’t remember ever hearing his name, but he turned up on Sk8Kings.com, and oddly enough, friend of the site Danimal had one of his “Arise” decks as mentioned on EPM. EIT has a slightly skewed verion of the clip. I did manage to find a longer version as well.

Taqwacore is both a fictional book described as “Catcher in the Rye” for young Muslims and a documentary film on the birth of Punk Islam. The trailer, press and web site weren’t as interesting as I had hoped. It’s all a little too slick and calculated, almost as if it’s being done because it’s such an obvious dichotomy, the purporters knew it would generate interest. I’m still interested in seeing the film, although I distrust anything to do with organized religion and gung-ho adoption of popular culture. And speaking of… I’ve also got some year old video of skateboarding inside the Catholic school system. The real story isn’t the skateboard that was designed and given to the Pope, instead it’s Father Peter Pomposello dragging his knuckle on the gym floor at St. Elizabeth’s in Washington Heights, NYC.

Continuing a theme from yesterday’s post. First up, a trailer for the film “Foolishness,” a slick film directed by Brian Sumner for Skate Bible. The skating looks top notch. Then there’s the message, starring some of the usual suspects like Christian Hosoi and now Cab. Noticeably missing from the list of famous proselytizing rippers, Lance Mountain. Next up, the satire called “Skate Babble.” Not very slick, and a little obvious, but still has a few good chuckles.
This is basically a rip off of this post, so thanks to the guy who made it and sent in the tip, Simon Wright.

Actually, I think the momentum has swung away from Satan, what, with TV shows like the Uprising. This illustration found on Flickr references the old Trident gum TV commercials. I think SNL or someone else did a bit about those commercials. Maybe it was Kids in the Hall. In any case, I’m not a big fan of Satan, because if you beleive in him, then you have to believe in Jesus too. I’m more of a Bob Dobbs or Touched by His Noodly Appendage guy. That shouldn’t stop your from checking out YAIAGIFT’s flickr stream of illustrations.
- Uh, thanks to MC for the tip.
