2008 Oregon Trifecta in Tigard
The first time for any park on the Trifecta is always fun, and Tigard was a blast, as well as a blast furnace. I don't know what the official temperature was, but it was nasty hot. The topic on everyone's mind was which half of the park are they going to use? They used the whole park for the contest, which was cool. The double layered coping that seemed so bizarre during construction now seems like something completely normal. There were teeth knocked out, two fireworks explosions, a bad collision and a lot of sweating.
Edwin Swaggerty took a digger and lost two teeth, but kept on skating. Later, there was a really bad collision between Chad Shetler and Rex Pearson that Chad was unable to get up from. It happened right in front of me, and from what I could tell, Chad didn't seem to lose consciousness, but he left a good amount of blood on the concrete and ended up with at the hospital with a concussion and 12 staples in his head. Rex was injured as well, but not as bad. Although, he didn't compete for the rest of the weekend.
About the fireworks: They appeared to be of the mortar variety without the launch tube... The first time was asinine, I don't care who it was that lit it. It was thrown from over the fence and was too close for comfort. Someone could have really been injured badly. "But no one got hurt" is the lamest excuse ever, kind of like the idiots that shoot guns in the air in the city on holidays or when their favorite team wins a championship. Sure, someone out of my eyesight could die or be maimed, but it's ok because no one was hurt. HOWEVER...
The second firework incident was actually very amusing. It was released in a controlled manner by Red in the center of the park when no one expecting it, in the middle of a judged jam that wasn't even Red's. It was pretty funny. I can't believe the police didn't have anything to say about it considering they were right there.
As far as the contest goes, it was heated. One thing that was interesting is that if one person started trying to go off on an obstacle and kept after it more than a couple tries, a handful of other guys would start hitting the same thing like a swarm of bees. It happened with the dinosaur and the square corner. A dinosaur (Trannysuarous Rex) hasn't seen that much human interaction since Land of the Lost. Every park needs a dinosaur and a volcano. The spinning top of the volcano didn't get much action. Most people just aired off the sides or over the whole thing.
The results were announced around 7:00pm again, which was a relief for everyone there. Considering there were 73 people entered in the pro division, we could have been there all night. Although by the time it ended it was finally starting to cool off. At the time I was surprised that Daniel Cardone won and Tyler Martin didn't make the top five. In fact, there was a little booing when Martin's 6th place finish was announced. I think allot of people had him pegged for the top three. A lot of people thought Kowalski did better, and seeing Benji in 5th doesn't happen often either. Now though, it all seems so unimportant.
