iMove Downhill Action

I accidentally fired up iMovie over the weekend and was greeted with a welcome screen that featured skateboarding. It’s the first time I’ve launched it after upgrading to Mavericks. Curious that the last version of iMovie was called iMovie 11, and this one is called iMovie 10. Mini mavericks review after the jump.

I upgraded to Mavericks the day after it was released and it’s been pretty painless. There not much of a noticeable difference actually. I’m running it both at home and at work, using mainly the Adobe CS6 programs. So far I have’t had any major issues. Tabbed finder windows are excellent for people who work with a lot of things open at once. I like the “tags” that replaced labels, but I don’t like the way that the color overlay is now absent from the title and only visible as a tiny dot when viewing things in the Finder. Also, I’ve noticed in coverflow mode, the current selected item does not always match up with the what coverflow shows. This might seem like a minor bug, but it can cause a lot of problems when sorting through folders and redistributing files. I found I had accidentally deleted the wrong image files based on what was visible in overflow. It can be very disorienting in folders with a lot of files, so hopefully that will be fixed soon. Speaking of coverflow, it’s still missing from iTunes, which is a big drag. I’m wondering if Apple lost some sort of patent lawsuit that forced them to remove it, but if not, bring it back please! Getting back on track, another feature people are talking about is the addition of Apple menu to secondary monitors if you are running more than one display. If that’s what you want, you can use it, but if you prefer to regain those 21 pixels like I did, you can turn it off in System Preferences. Safari has changed a little too, the biggest thing I’ve noticed has been cosmetic. History is no longer available as an icon in your Top Sites view, or whatever they are calling it. My Mavericks upgrade has been uneventful for the most part. It doesn’t feel like a full version jump, which may be why this version is free.

UPDATE: iPads too.

  1. I work at an independent Apple computer store. The content that Apple provides for us to show off iPhoto, has a library of images of Patrick Melcher skating.

  2. Just seen it today on photographic ad.
