Zhu Zhu pets were all the rage with the toddler crowd about two years ago, then they kind of jumped the shark and sputtered. They even tried to branch out with some ninja appeal but it didn’t seem to work because they were soon relegated to bargain bins. I caught a few minutes of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and was surprised that there was actually a Zhu Zhu Pets float. It reminded me that I had some skateboard-related Zhu Zhu pets in the hopper.
Here’s the float, complete with Kidz Bop singers and skateboarding Zhu.
In-store Target display during their heyday, circa 2010.
From the Zhuniverse web site.
So you’ve been to this website before, right? You know I collect some pretty stupid things, but I couldn’t bring myself to buy this even when it was drastically reduced. It’s a plastic sled shaped like a skateboard, but the wheels don’t spin. The wheel on the bottom of the Zhu Zhu Pet slides through the hole and the little bugger (not included!) basically carries the damned thing. Plus, it barely looks like a skateboard. They have a surfboard version too.
A split second of skateboard sliding in this commercial.
