Skaten is Verslavend

Well who am I argue? I’d have to translate it first. The A-side title needs no translation – Get Rad (With the right protection). Sounds like a description of a dorm room poster for safe sex, but no, it’s almost as titillating. Nothing excites an adolescent more than a pullout poster extolling the virtues of hard plastic shells and tender, soft foam. This poster is courtesy of the Dutch organization known as the (translated) Consumer & Safety Foundation, circa 1989 or 1990, judging by that Nicky Guerrero mask model.

– Thanks to Matthijs for the scans.

A little background info from Matthijs:

I bet those indoor shots were taken at the former Amsterdam PP (Powell Peralta) warehouse. I didn’t and don’t know these two guys but they could have just been the only pro-ams in the country! The content is in Dutch but I think you get the idea (“wear your helmet!”).Of course there is an attempt to speak to the young crowd with some ‘hip’ language. The two big headlines say: “Without helmet, head broken” and “Skating is addictive”. I think they actually just managed to st(r)ay from the lame or rediculous. Word list included. Some true things in there. Best one? “Rad…..difficult to describe…”,and “Style…..you have it or you don’t…..”.

Here’s a close up of the woordenlijst.

  1. I notice that the kids of skateboarders, mine included, wear helmets and that kids who’s parents arn’t at the park usually don’t. Also many of those dads whose kids wear helmets don’t themselves, me sometimes too.
