ASR is kaput

I saw via Grant Brittain on Facebook that ASR is calling it quits due to… I’ll give you one guess, a weak economy. You can read the whole rigmarole on the ASR Facebook page. So ASR was no longer fiscally attractive huh? Maybe you didn’t need to do it twice a year. You’d think that idea would have occurred to them, but instead they got the idea to increase action sports presence in the Outdoor Retailer trade shows in Salt Lake City with the rest of the, you know, kayaks, backpacks and uh, snow shoes or whatever. San Diego is bummed, as the ASR show had 22 million dollar impact, as reported in SIgn On San Diego. ASR has the best interests of the industry in mind, right? The parent company is Nielsen Expositions, and they have no real connections to your lifestyle in any way outside of trying to capitalize on any given demographic. It’s what they do. Silver lining? Fuck ’em. The industry should sponsor their own trade show. Seize the day.

Thanks to OMA for the image, it’s from a 2007 ASR write up.

I believe the Chief has been doing that for years now. It’s called Crossroads and they serve free beer…

    1. Who is the Chief?

      1. Jamie Thomas.

        1. What does he win?!

        2. Yeah, what do I win?

        3. A date with Jamie Thomas

          Who’s she?

  2. This is a good thing.
ASR went downhill back in the 80’s.

  3. Time for the sales reps to start hitting the road again. Its damn hard for a small mom and pop shop especially in this economy to afford attending these shows. This will be a good thing for the industry.

Nate Sherwood said it best: assholes, sluts and rubbish.

  6. I wanted to go this last show but they made it so hard for the little guy . You had to make an appointment with your rep and you better have a bunch of $$$$$ . Thanks for helping out the small shops huh !

With the internet, you don’t need a booth full of “next years” product to determine what you want to carry (shops) or buy (end users).

  8. Thank God! ASR was a real “bro-fest’ of people who never had real skateboarding’s intrest at heart. Another one bites the dust.

I first heard about this on the silverfish forums. Apparently a lot of the longboard company reps are still planning on flying out to San Diego and having an informal trade show of sorts. One guy talked about bringing a bunch of boards and bombing hills with people, letting them try the product.

  10. Agenda in Huntingbeach is the new show. At least we can skate ‘The Berrics’

  11. I think it’s better if they just took it “viral.” I mean, hey, word of mouth works better. Maybe not faster, but it’s way cheaper. Especially if you’re making a quality board. Word gets around fast.
