A priest, and a Morman skateboarder walk into a skateshop…

I got a hundred tips about this skateboarding priest (right), all of which I failed to follow up because I assumed it was the two guys on the left that I had squirreled away for a while, no idea where I originally found it, but it’s could easily have been here. So here it is, a wacky Hungarian priest who obviously spent some time on the board before he was ordained. How about the Morman Church trying (on some level) to be hip? They’ve got a well done video featuring a guy named Josh Maready talking mostly about skateboarding, and a little bit about the Mormon church. He’s so articulate and normal that he almost makes Mormans seem cool, or at least sane. Check it out on Mormon.org. and because the heads in SLC doesn’t believe in allowing embedded video, I’m going to add a 2006 video of an Australian reverend cussing out some skateboarders in front of a church. He ended up resigning in 2007.

– Thanks to Zach Olsen for the tip.

  1. I’m LDS/Mormon, a life-long skater and a daily visitor of this site. I won your Ed Benedict flip trick kicker gap contest a while back (with a pretty lame kickflip I admit!) I served as an LDS missionary in Southern France from 1999-2001 and skated downtown Pau (on the Spanish border) and several other French cities during those years in my white shirt, tie and signature black name tag. I probably didn’t look very cool… but I had a ton of fun and got to skate with some unbelievable French skaters!

      …your point is?

      1. No point really 🙂 Just letting Randy know he’s got at least one semi-sane Mormon that enjoys the site… and somebody might find it amusing imagining a silly looking missionary grinding handrails in France.

  2. I met Josh back when he was on 5boro, 8 or so years ago. Then worked together for a week at Skate Camp. Nice guy, great skateboarder. Went to the bar with us, but yeah didn’t drink. That is what he’s into, but didn’t preach it. He is all good by me.

  3. Actually if I’m not mistaken the photo at the top is actually of 2 canadian crown lawyers on skateboards not priest

    1. I heard that mentioned before..

that pic caption refers to them as Brothers,
BTW, that pic is from 1965 “Skateboard Mania” article (may 14th)

see page 134 on Google Books…

Aren’t most Mormons articulate and normal? I join the ranks of other Mormon skaters (as few as we may be) in declaring our coolness and sanity.

    1. I love all our LDS readers, as long as they don’t show up on my doorstep at 8:pm on a Saturday morning…

The funniest thing about that last video is that all those people are no doubt proud to be Australians.

Randy, one grandfather’s solution when some Witnesses came around one weekend in the 50’s was to answer the door in his underwear, with the mock-indignant line: “Ladies! Not on a Sunday!!”

  9. Funny, I jumped on here today to see if you had posted anything about this priest and if not send you a line about it, but looks like you already did yesterday. I know I can always count on Kilwag to be up on all things skateboarding.
