Biothane soy based urethane

Biothane soy-based urethane

While Bamboo skateboards might face a little bit of an uphill battle for your average gnar dog to accept, alternative wheel compounds might have an easier row to hoe. It’s a probable that most skaters don’t care what wheels are made out of as long as they work, whereas many skaters probably wouldn’t step on a bamboo board except to goof on it. Sector Nine has a line of wheels out called Biothane, which is made with some percentage of soy-based urethane. They don’t go into the specifics of the compound, but they do share a few statistics: The manufacturing process results in 36% smaller carbon footprint than traditional methods. In addition, their manufacturing process consumes 61% less non-renewable energy sources. Maybe they bake them in the sun. They seem to be in the same price range as the rest of their lineup. Sector Nine’s web site doesn’t appear to have anything on the wheels at the moment, but you can see the advert that ran in Transworld Business after the jump.

Click to enlarge it. No, I didn’t set up a special studio background to shoot this “green technology” advert. That’s just what my kitchen floor looks like at the moment.

  2. Uh, is that sarcasm?

  3. Someone please let me know when DaddyYo is bored of SkateAndAnnoy, so I can start coming back.

  4. Ever notice how the Bush administration can’t never says “global warming,” and always says “climate change instead?

No, I don’t. You are prejudised against conservatives aren’t you.

There is no scientific proof of manmade global warming.

  8. prejudised? Is that like strategery?

an iraq war sounds like a pretty big crisis to me, why arent the liberals supporting that?

  10. Where was the government bail out when California’s big three (Vision, Powell, Santa Cruz) had their crisis in the early 90’s?

    Hello my fellow Americans,

I just thought I'd drop by SNA to make a special announcement. Tomorrow morning, FEMA will be assisting in a voluntary evacuation of all skateboarders to Oregon. The following day, there will some difficult, but necessary tactical nuclear strikes across most of the country. Do not be alarmed, special new neutron-based weapons will used. These weapons were introduced in response to the growing impurity of skateboarding today. The planned impact of these actions are threefold.

Firstly, many poorly built skateparks will simply evaporate. Decently made skateparks will not be affected. Now, before you gum up the boards debating that one, please be advised that the Defense Department has already catalogued all applicable parks using infrared "Stoke-detecting" drones. FEMA/Blackwater teams are already in place to assist in the rebuilding of all substandard skateparks.

Secondly, skateboards that are not domestically produced, and/or skateboard "replicas" may experience mechanical failure. Don't worry, reissues will not be impacted by the fallout, only snakeboards etc.

Thirdly, and most importantly, large, useless sections of the internet will be permanently destroyed. Thus, my announcement here . . . SNA will of course be spared. But please be advised that if you do not live on either the East or West Coasts, DO NOT ATTEMPT to use the internet for at least 72 hours.

Thank you for your time, and rest assured, the government will not let you down this time.

They need the troops for escalating the war in Afghanistan!

  13. .. because Afghanistan got worse when we had to put all those troops into Iraq,

Afghanistan got worse when we didn’t get out right after we wreaked vengeance and shot the place up. It will keep getting worse until we get the fvck out. Seven years is more than long enough.

  19. To get things back on track… the concept of incorporating soy based or other sustainable urethane in the production of skateboard wheels is great! I just got a set of 54mm Satori “EcoThane” wheels, and I love them. They were pretty normally priced, and perform just like any other 101a wheel I’ve ever skated. Why not move in a direction towards more sustainability, huh?

  20. skaterdave on December 8, 2008 - Reply

Don’t buy these wheels DLo…vote with your wallet…by the way skateboarding would never have been invented if not for liberals. Same goes for these lovely United States. This country was started by EXTREME liberals – violent radical revolutionary liberals…conservatives would have kept us a colony. You should say thanks and shut up.

  21. is something inherently wrong with bamboo boards? the only ones I have seen have been popsicle boards that are too small for me. I am open to any options that offer more sustainability. props to sector 9 and satori!!! on the topic of us getting off “our” topics, I am personally enjoying ya’lls interaction with daddy yo!
I (like daddy yo) have a dislike of liberal politics, sure the conservatives are a lot worse, but I try to keep it radical! as a skateboarder whose really formative years were in middle america in the 80’s, I am used to being a outcast. nowadays skateboarding is so mainstream I often laugh at the fact that skating is what I do that keeps me most in touch with the middle american mainstream. sometimes at the parks in the really small towns I go to I get some crap slung my way by some teenager. I love it it reminds me of who I am and the fact that when all has been stacked against skating for me, it just makes me hunger for it more.
this whole thing with daddy yo is interesting to me. I don’t care what kind of board anyone rides, even if it has straps. whatever floats your boat is fine. daddy yo has been writing all this stuff to get under “our” skin, and to me it is entertaining. keep it comming! and daddy yo keep swimming against the stream, because it is the funnest line I have found! anyways if we did not have assholes amongst us the cool people would not seem so special
one more thing. liberal, what does it mean? like to give more, and conservative means something like to “save” or “hold onto something”…. I’m not sure what they mean, I want to conserve what we have on this earth and not give it away in liberal portions. gear we can grow is good. that hardrock maple we love takes forever to grow. how about hemp wheels!!!

  22. I wasn’t implying that there was anything inherently wrong with a bamboo board, I only meant to point out that they aren’t yet accepted as a viable replacement for conventional board construction. Street or tranny wear on a deck is typically a different type of wear and tear than most of the longer bamboo boards would experience carving, etc..

I’ve never tried a bammboo street board. Nobody has sent one in for review. I know tfrom talking to manufacturers that here were durrability problems associated with bamboo short boards in the recent past, but I also assume some technological advances might be possible.

Sustainable alternatives in skateboard manufacturing (or anything else) would be great. Even if global warming was a hoax, it would still make sense to use greener techologies if the price and performance ratio worked out. Again I say, No blood for urethane! Downside – soy prices and corn crops go up, poorer countries can’t afford to feed people. Butterfly effect.

  23. well put. but the reason I suggest hemp wheels is not because I smoke pot, but it is based on my belief (based on some facts) that we are not using a majority of our corn and soy for food. these are crops that in general are livestock food. the livestock industry is the main thing that is out of ballance in our agricultural system. have you seen what the soy industry has been doing in brazil. I am not super hyped on these wheels because because soy is actually not so sustainable, more sustainable than oil. corn and soy like tony hawk vitamins are not easely digested. other crops are better foods for the poor. I was disapointed to findout that the bamboo boards I know about have maple plys as well. it is my observation that the quality of wood is going down the average 2×4 is full of knots. I bought a (major brand) board in january that really seemed to chip and my bolts started to sink into the wood deep. in summer I scored a 91 new deal steve douglas deck that had little wear but the graphic was mostly gone. it is clearly a more durable board and feels solid for being 17 years old. good wood comes from big trees. big trees are getting kinda rare. thanks for doing skate and annoy.

  24. daddyo please, go post @ another site. you look like a 13 year little g.bush. go drink some oil.

  26. If conservatives/republicans/non-believers are right about global warming being a “hoax,” yet we treat it as real, what have we done? Cleaned up the environment for ourselves. If liberal/democrat/believers are right about it, and we do nothing… we’re fkd. These wheels and bamboo boards have a very small market, but it’s there… good for them.

That statement is absurd on its face. Greenhouse gases and various other chemicals, soot, and dirt are clearly linked to the weather and overall climate. The question is one of to what degree human activity contributes to this not whether it does.

Every credible climate change critic acknowledges this. Your statement equates to climate change denial. NO scientists critical of main-stream climate change claims take this position. None. Stop being an idiot.

No scientist has demonstrated than manmade affects of climate change. Post some proof. You can’t find it.

Every scientific report says something like “probably, maybe, could possibly” or some other qualifing statement.

I beleive this site is called skate and annoy sounds like daddy yo has the annoy part covered in spades not so much the skating part though. Why are u trying to bring a bunch o BS political discourse to a skateboarding blog site? You are either just a forum troll or someone who really likes trying to prove to the world how superior u are to compensate for your lack of something. skateboarding skills being one of them. Go start your on blog on politics and call It “I love the sound of my own voice” except no one would go there. haha sorry I was just bored.

You really need to learn how to think deductively. All the materials I have listed have been shown to have an influence on climate. Some, such as sulfuric acid, dirt, and methane have clearly been demonstrated to have such a profound effect that the problem of causation vs. mere correlation is not even considered at issue. (See any number of studies of volcanic events and climate.) Since human activity is one of the sources of these materials being released into the atmosphere there must by necessity be a certain percentage of these climatic effects caused by human action. Q. fvckin’ E.D. as we educated folks like to abbreviate.

The interesting questions revolve around what actual proportion humans contribute to, not the simplistic all or nothing arguments put forth by brain dead legacy trustafarian morons like your “claimed” fellow alumni Al Gore and George Bush.

    You remain an idiot.

In our fair state creationism can be taught.

  34. Big props to the biothane, as an environmental sci student its good to see company’s being more environmentally responsible. Sustainability is the way to go.
And to all those out there who don’t believe in climate change yet..wake up eh, there is more than enough scientific proof that points to our increased CO2 production being the cause of the climate shift. We need to start limiting the amount of resources we are using.

  35. is daddy yo really that stupid??????? bio wheels AWESOME. im in need of some biothane, does anyone know where i can buy it in a liquid from?

    thanks
