Baltimore: Art, rock and skateable style

SOB 3 Year Anniversary

Who is up for being Skate and Annoy’s on the scene correspondent for this Skatepark of Baltimore fundraiser? We’re interested the skateable art part especially. There are no details on this March 15th event on the official SOB site, which looks like it hasn’t been updated since October of last year. Fortunately, Seth Levy sent us an email. What is it the third anniversary of? “Three years of not having anything built yet but maybe soon hopefully.” Stick with it! And we’re serious about wanting to get some coverage of the event if anyone is up for it.

  1. I’ll do it. I’ll need airfare from Louisiville, and prefer to stay in a Holiday Inn Express. I’ll pay for my food and the $10 at the door. I’ll take lots of pics, but I’m gonna need a nice Canon camera. A D40 will do, but I’d prefer the newest model. Thanks for the opportunity!

  2. OK, check is in the mail, minus airfare, cause we’ll send the corporate helicopter.

  3. Awesome! Thanks! Can I bring the kid? The wife will kill me if I leave him with a sitter while out on a corporate skate trip.

  5. Yes, three years of “not having built anything yet but hopefully soon”, is still a reason to celebrate. Over the past three years the SOB has been steadily moving closer to our mission to build a public concrete skatepark in Baltimore by actively working towards our main objectives; planning, fundraising, educating & advocating, and obtaining the site on which to build our skatepark.

The SOB has been engaged in planning activities since 2005. Some of the highlights include officially incorporating as small business in State of Maryland in January 2006 and officially incorporating as a non-profit organization in November 2006. Since 2005 the SOB has raised close to $11,500.00 from grassroots fundraising. In 2007 the SOB was awarded a grant from the Abell Foundation of $30,000 for planning and pre development costs associated with building a public skatepark for Baltimore City skateboarders. The SOB also partnered with the Virgin Music Festival and the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour in 2007. Since 05, the SOB has organized a number of advocacy and educational activities, the purpose of which is to engage, inform and involve the youth and community about the sport of skateboarding and the facility the SOB intends to build. In 2007 the SOB was featured in local print, radio, TV and electronic media and held nine skateboarding contests in Maryland. The SOB has had success in its plans to develop the skatepark, along the lines of locating and working at securing an appropriate site, the SOB is presently working with City Council members, the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Department of planning to secure a site through a public private partnership.

The Skate-able art show is our first grassroots fundraiser of the year. The night will feature music and beverages. There will also be skateboard art, skateboard photography and gift certificates to bid on. The show will include skate-able-art structures which are sculptures made by University art students that we can skate in the gallery. Please come out and support us at this event.
