McRAD

McRad

The Wilmington Star has a short article on Chuck Treece and McRad’s new album and tour titled McRad is McBack The classic skate rock band returns with new tour, album. The new album, titled FDR has a release date of July 24, 2007. McRad had a 2001 release titled Absence of Sanity, but they are most likely still remembered for the “Prevent This Tragedy” track on Thrasher Skate Rock’s Blazing Wheels and Barking Trucks. You can still get a Prevent This Tragedy shirt, one of the best designs ever, in mandatory purple from Thrasher. I’m not a fan of purple shirts, but I love Prince! There is a planned release of a McRad skateboard by a company called Wreck Room, but Oregon’s own Poolside Skateboards (Scappoose, not Portland) already has a Chuck Treece/McRad model. Somewhere I’ve got an old video tape that has a segment with Chuck Treece hanging out with one of the Surf Punks on Sk8TV. I should have dug that up for this post. Lastly, McRad was part of the inspiration for the name of my old skate punk band, McWilson. We were going to be called Mr Wilson after the classic skateboarding slam, but changed it to McWilson because that seemed funnier. No word yet on a McWilson reunion.

They did that song “weakness”, too, from some old Powell video. Great song.

  2. you can chuck in the american hardcore movie talking about bad brains, he toured with them as a fill in musician in the past and can throw down some sick bad brains covers playing live. i have skated with chuck for years at fdr, i actually knew him for a while before i realized his music was the music i knew so well from those old powell videos and the first savanah slamma video. the original mcrad lineup got together for a show at fdr on the 4th of july about 6 or 7 years ago, sorry i forget the exact year now, but it was one of the coolest experiences i’ve ever had in my life ripping it up to those tunes live. unfortunately andy the original drummer passed away from an OD not too long after that show, RIP.

  3. i actually may be mistaken about andy being the OG drummer, but he was the drummer the first time I saw them live

  4. I had one in Maroon and Yellow, and I agree it was one of the greatest t-shirts ever.

  5. Maroon and yeller must’ve been popular, I had one too. I think Randy had it in white with light blue screen or maybe my sister. Greater sleeper punk find circa ’92 when you realized they were still providing them. Also a great track off the album, unique hardcore, which is rare.

McRad is on a split EP with Denver Skate punk band Frontside Five. The McRad portion is an eclectic mix of songs Chuck put togeter. Includes some live stuff from CBGB’s in 1983 as well as some new cuts. There is a great song called Hesitation at the end. There are a few Dub sounding trax as well. The Frontside five stuff is straight ahead skate rock and is pretty cool too. I found it at http://www.5corerecords.com
