Skateboarding: A Popular Sport for Today’s Teens

News flash! Skateboarding: A Popular Sport for Today’s Teens! Jessica Mousseau wrote this article. You can view her tiny, saucy picture here, or see Einstein writing your words on a chalkboard here.

Published January 11, 2007, but written some time in the 90’s as it lists Big Brother as an industry publication. When was the last issue of Big Brother? Seems like 5 years ago, but maybe that’s just the last time it was funny. Is Thrasher a U.S. only publication? That’s surprising if true.

In the US, you’ll pay about $100 for a locally-manufactured board. Keep an eye on advertisements in industry magazines Big Brother, Slap, Thrasher, and Transworld Skateboarding (all US-only titles). Of course, here we’re talking about ‘new school’ boards that are skinny, short-ish, and almost symmetrical, with small, hard wheels.

She does give some good advice though, especially about finding out what kind of setup a person rides before gifting.

Are you choosing a skateboard as a gift? Have a long conversation with the person you’re buying the skateboard for, so that you get what they’ll use, neither more nor less. You might want to look into the preassembled complete boards that some shops offer around the holidays, if only because you’ll pay less than if you put the board together piece-by-piece.
