Missoula Montana has a 16,000 square foot skatepark completed by Grindline in 2006. I saw video of this either on Fuel TV or Tony Hawk’s Skatepark Tour. I thought it was going to be huge. It’s pretty good sized, but not nearly as mammoth as it looked on TV. I think it’s pretty safe to say that any skatepark is going to appear smaller in real life, but I haven’t been to Lake Cunningham yet.)

Number two in what I hope is a series of other people doing my “job” here at Skate and Annoy. Local favorite among commentators, JakeandAnnoy interviews Rusell Foisey, a dangerous guy. Let’s see… Russ has been featured here in a Shot of the Week and he rides for Old Man Army. Also, this interview is a bit out of date. Jake gave it to me a little bit before Black September, AKA the Great Skate and Annoy Server Meltdown of 2009. It was probably late before that happened, and then like so many other things from that couple of months, it fell through the cracks. Honestly, I think Jake’s glowing review of another recent interview was his way of saying WTF? Where’s the piece I did for you? Well here it is Jake… Now let’s talk about all the out of focus pictures you gave me and lack of photo credits. But not this photo from Dan Hughes. Anyone heard from that guy since he got married?

This week’s Shot of the Week is from Steve Potwin, who captured Steve Caballero on the monolith at San Jose’s Lake Cunningham skatepark. I actually saw this on Caballero’s blog. You need to see the full frame shot to get a sense of how GNARLY this is. Check out the Shot of the Week. And then go see Potwin on MySpace, he’s got more pictures and some animated sequences too.

Friend of the site Weirdo Skateboards is also one of the sponsors of a contest series at Lake Cunningham skate park. More info at sjparks.org, or check the flier after the jump. I hear that Cab is a regular there. Sure would be a bummer to have to skate against him, huh?

Aero, a candy bar brand popular in the UK, filmed an commercial spot with Bob Burnquist skating at the Lake Cunningham skate park with the bowls filled with brown balloons to resemble the bubbles in the chocolate. It looks great, trouble is, it’s an exact copy of the same concept that was actually shot here in at Portland’s D.O.S.. Ignorance is going to be hard to claim, considering Apple Computer is currently showing the original video in some of their in-store loops for Apple TV. Of course there is a chance that the originators might be getting paid too. Watch the video after the jump. UPDATE: Added for making of interviews.

This was my fourth year going on this trip. This year the group was in full disarray. Hailey, Lake Cunningham and Washington State were all possibilities being discussed. In the end, small groups went their separate ways. We started for San Jose but ended up touring southern Oregon and the Oregon coast. Too many choices!

The new Lake Cunningham Park set to open looks amazing in the pictures, but it’s rubbing the locals the wrong way. Kind of like a Klamath Falls situation squared. The San Jose Metro reported:
Although everyone agrees that the park is a massive benefit to San Jose, they admit that the mandatory pads rule might turn off a few folks, as will the fees, which are $2 per day or $50 per year—along with a $6 for parking.
“It’s a great park, but it’s already got two negatives against it as far as the street skaters go,” explained Caballero. “Street skaters don’t like to wear pads. It’s not very comfortable for them. They can get away with helmets, but wearing knee pads and elbow pads—it just doesn’t feel like street skating. It’s like something else. It doesn’t feel natural. That, and paying to get in and paying to park. So I would say three negatives.”
Echos exactly what we’ve been hearing in the comments here almost since day one. It’s hard to imagine how a city so in a region so rich in skate history could be so clueless in this day and age. It made the front page of the weekly free paper, so maybe citizens will take note. The article isn’t only about the negative aspects however. So don’t be afraid to check out Now Boarding.

Sure, we had construction pictures of San Jose’s Lake Cunningham skatepark out the wazoo and then some, but nobody cares about that once the park is open. Especially when you have a photo session with Lance Mountain, Steve Cabellero, Salba, and Rick “Ask the Doctor” Blackhart. Head on over to Concrete Disciples for the always adept MRZ photos. The server has been hit or miss since for a while now, just try back later if it doesn’t load. - Thanks to JF for the tip.
