I get emails from companies trying to sell skateboarding goods and services. Most of them go in the junk folder. These guys are pelting me with mail though. And because the email html formatting was messed up, I thought it was some euro company called Blunt. Turns out it’s a Chinese company called CBSC. Their marketing combats the anti-Chinese skateboard manufacturing sentiments by claiming North American hardwoods and American skateboarder supervision. They also try to use a little skateboarder psychology, encouraging you to be a rebel and have your skateboards made in China. Of course the contradicts their other claims that everyone is not-so secretly doing it anyway. i don’t know how you are supposed to be a rebel by conforming.

While it is true that some lower tiered Chinese workshops use Chinese equipment you can rest assured that all on-site manufacturing equipment has been imported at great expense from the US or Germany. Ask any insider if this makes a difference in the finished product, the answer will always be overwhelmingly YES ! Now not to over look the obvious, raw wood…. All CBSC’s raw timber is imported from the upper Great Lakes Region of North America.

Most amusing is their claim to innovative shapes, when they all look the same. Plus the prince reference is a classic.

CBSC is continually discontinuing shapes as often as we introduce new ones. We never offer shapes or concaves that say “party like its 1999”.

I’m not advocating that everyone ride fish shapes like we did in the 80’s (Yes, I am.) but come on, there’s absolutely nothing innovative about a popsicle stick shape anymore. Ironically, in 1999 it actually was innovative. Now it’s just the standard. Check out these innovative shapes below, or at the two web sites associated with CBSC, tenxtruth.com and vitalvehicle.com.

    I never knew a shape like that was even POSSIBLE!
    The Chinese really are on their marry way to ruling the world.

  2. it’s like “find the deck that doesn’t belong”–they’re all looking the same to me.

    that is really typical of chinese marketing to bring up 1999, too. maybe they’re quoting prince. maybe this culture does find this shape innovative. oh, now i’m just being an ethnocentric ass.
