Skateboard, Uh ah ah.

Die Skateboard-Welle war schon eine Weile in Deutschland angekommen, als man dem Thema einen deutschen Song gab.
In the 70′s there was a German teeny bopper who had some sort of hit song called Skateboard, Uh ah ah. At some point recently he tried to mount a comeback which involved rereleasing the song with new, updated mixes. There’s not much info out there that’s easy to find on this Benny character. For example, iTunes seems to have him confused with a Mexican perfomer of the same name.
- Thanks to Spencer Montgomery for the tip.

Here’s the audio track.
Here’s the comeback re-released and remixed single from 1999. So hip it hurts (your ears). To listen to it you need go check out Amazon’s mp3 samples. There’s two mixes with English and German versions of both. The Rudeboard mixes must be some sort of a (crappy) tribute to Trio.
In English, the lyrics are spectacular. “Get out of school, come on and put on your jeans. Leave you homework at home, go where the action begins.” and so on. Aw heck. “Skateboard, oh ah ah. City Surfin, ah ah. Skateboard, oh ah ah. It’s a crazy race. Skateboard, oh ah ah. Sidewalk riding, ah ha. Skateboard, oh ah ah. On the concrete race.”
There’s another German release on the same record label for the same song, but sung by a band called Copains.
Here’s another version of the single, with out the “uh ah ah.”
Maybe the folks at iTunes think he’s Mexican because he also did a song called Amigo Charly Brown, which it should be noted, has nothing to do with the Universal Features copyrighted character known as Charlie Brown.

Plus he bears a suspicious resemblance to Benny Lava, a semi-imaginary Tamil singer.
Wow, I thought I´ve seen/heard every version of that song so far. I´ve never realized the two different covers, although I found out that I have both in my collection. I just saw they have different labels.
COPAINS is Frank Farian, a well-know german producer, who also produced acts like BONEY M. and MILLI VANILLI.
Regarding to BENNY he recorded this song first (produced by Farian) and Farian covered it afterwards (I interviewed Benny for the german skatemag BOARDSTEIN a couple of years ago; he also gave me two pics of him skateboarding back then). Both labels (Copains and Benny) say July 1977. I never got an answer from Farian, asking who came first.
If you want to check out Benny´s website, go to http://www.bennyschnier.de (you´ll also find a cover of the Skateboard 45 he signed for me, while doing the interview!).
Do you have more skaterock stuff from the 70ies?
Peace
Dr. Skaterock
P.S.: If you do some research for “Benny and Copains” you´ll find more records!
…sounds like Z-Malibu Kids….
