S.O.B. Girls

Skatepark of Baltimore is selling a “Girls of Skateboarding” calendar to benefit the Skatepark of Baltimore. You can pick yours up here, and no, it’s not that kind of calendar.

Thanks for posting this.
It’s great to see women refusing to allow the boys to have all the fun.
rad!
Skatepark of B-more is a joke. She has been throwing benifits for years for her own spending money.
Daveill that’s bull shit, the SOB is a registered nonprofit organization and we file with the IRS every year, thus making all of our accounting public record. Maybe it’s just easier for you to tear someone down that is trying to build something great for everyone then get involved in a meaningful way.
For once I feel lucky living in Baltimore. Hot Calender!
Doc, Keep on rocking on! Remember tis not the critic that counts.
I’ve been involved, donated and helped her out as did all the locals. What progress has she made and where did all the money go?

ummm this is kind of reverse sexist. girls are allowed to have fun, it’s up to them if they let themselves just like any individual… male, female or even neuter haha… it has nothing to do with not letting the boys have fun too. i don’t get this kind of mentality with skateboarding. how will it ever be equal as long as the females continue to separate themselves with statements like this.
Daveill- The money goes into a business checking account; right now we have over $13,000 and a grant for $30,000 from the Abell foundation.
You are cordially invited to our next meeting Jan 10th for a detailed description of everything we have been doing. Our primary activities include planning, fundraising, educating & advocating, and obtainment of the skatepark site.
We also send out a monthly update that details all of our progress, I can add you to that mailing list if you would like.
The SOB has organized a variety of fundraising activities to make headway towards our monetary goal. Highlights include a grant from the Abell Foundation of $30,000 for planning and pre-development costs associated with building a public skatepark and partnering partnering with the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour, Virgin Music Festival Vans Warped Tour and Nike.
The SOB has held numerous advocacy and educational activities, the purpose of which is to engage, inform and involve the youth and community about the sport of skateboarding and the facility the SOB intends to build. These events include Youth Outreach, After school programs, Art Festivals, Skateboarding exhibitions, Skateboarding lessons/clinics, Skateboarding contests in Baltimore and around Maryland.
The SOB has been engaged in planning activities since 2005. The purpose of organizing and planning is to establish the administrative framework of the SOB and plan for the different phases of SOB’s effort to establish a Baltimore skatepark. The SOB holds monthly meetings with volunteers, meetings with public officials, businesses and area foundations. Highlights include officially incorporating as small business in State of Maryland in January 2006, officially incorporating as a non-profit organization in November 2006, meetings with City Council members and the Mayor’s office in 2007, and Partnership with the City of Baltimore 2008.
In 2008 The SOB established a public private partnership with the City of Baltimore through the Mayor’s office to establish a Skatepark Task Force to determine the best site on which to construct the skatepark and explore potential funding sources for the design and construction of the SOB. The SOB has conducted a rigorous site selection process, coordinated outreach to communities proximate to the sites of interest and undertook predevelopment design activities. In 2009 the SOB and the Task Force recommended Roosevelt Park in Hampden to the Mayor as the best site on which to construct the Skatepark of Baltimore and are in the process of negotiating an agreement for the land.
Rome wasn’t built in a day and we appreciate all the contributions everyone has made but realistically this project will take time, keep the faith.
Kudos on your dedication to the cause. Sounds like
you put in a lot of hard work.
Holy MotherofChrist, you struck a nerve, DAVEILL.
Either fundraising is the most thankless job on earth or the guilty protest too much.
Either way say something else, I’m lovin this…
we’ve got nothing to hide, he asked what we’ve been doing and so I laid it out.
instagat’n..sorry ;) I have no idea whats going on in Baltimore but the 1st park in Phoenix,Az took almost 4 years(93′-construction started late 97′ and alot of that was the fundraising part.
You did lay it out tho.
In 4 different consecutive posts and over 100 words.
My posts are pretty long too so we got that in common.
Pragmatic advice is to not be so manically defensive if you are trying to convince local skeptics.
Also, and I’m playing satan’s helper, but you can cite mailers and business accounts and still hide/mishandle funds. Cause..if crooks were put their embezzlements out in the open they wouldn’t be as successful. No?
Incidentally, I liked the calendar.
Hey Doc Murdock! I thought those skateparks built themselves! Haw Haw. Guess not.
DAVEILL – these things take time and effort AND perseverance. Sure, you’ve probably helped out on occasion over time, but you’re probably not involved in the day to day long term boring stuff. You know the kind thing like writing grants and paperwork that isn’t involved with a BBQ or can’t be done while drinking a beer. It sounds like the Doc has answered all your questions.
Randy- What, you’re too good to do paperwork or complete important work documents after a beer or 9?
Well, guess I’m just not as professional then, la tee da your majesty!
what most people don’t realize is how long it actually takes to raise the funds for a skatepark. especially if you do not have city funds available. we’re talking about 5 years!
I won’t air out dirty laundry. Too much respect for skateboarding, this site and Doc. I do remain skeptical though mainly personal but also the challenge of dealing with the exit of Mayor Dixon(guilty of using donated gift cards for her own spending money), the economy and the failure of the current concrete skatepark in Baltimore.
I wish you all the best Doc!!!
It took my town four years to get from talking to pouring… go to those monthly meetings DAVEILL, it’s part of what gives a group legitimacy in the eyes of those who’ll kick out the BIG bucks. Its the hardest part for those doing the planning;
getting real skaters to come sit down and not skate every month, fidgeting in their seats saying ” fuck this shit, why am I here, I could be out skating”
Nice job ! I for one appriciate DocMurdock’s hard work as well as anyone else who supports there cause !
In my own experience in finally breaking ground for a concrete park in Poolesville Maryland it take time and perseverance. Just over 4 years from PowerPoint to breaking ground. Most of the time is spent exactly what Stephanie has been doing and is continues to do! Stephanie; don’t lose the faith and remember all the kids of today and tomorrow who will love this part. I know what a thankless job it can be at times.
When I wanted to quit, I would talk to one of the kids who would ask “how’s it going Mr. Z” and the remember pricks who stand in the way (no way they are going to win) and get regenerated!
