JFA on S&A: Brian Brannon interview

JFA - Brian Brannon interview

I was in high school when a friend turned me onto JFA. He had a sarcastic sense of humor and found JFA’s “Beach Blanket Bongout” to be the most brilliant thing ever. The Valley of the Yakes EP had skatefish on skateboasrds all over it, so that was an instant turn on. Then there the subtleties of “We Know You Suck.” In college I bought the Mad Garden EP just for the Peanuts theme song, and wore that record out. JFA could come off as seemingly inane, but at the same time often brilliant when it comes to distilling an emotion into a couple minutes of barraging vocals and guitars. The end results were greater than the sum of the parts. Some 25 plus years later, JFA is still out there. They’ve got a new live album on DC Jam Records titled “To all our friends.” This is the Brian Brannon interview on Skate and Annoy.

Great questions, Kilwag. I always dug JFA in a big way, and you inspired me to plug in one of their cassettes!

awesome interview… one of true punk bands to ever exist, writing about things we all deal with on day to day basis… keeping it real. always.

“our first gig as JFA was with Black Flag” ,, wow!

    “I hate Phoenix boring place
    narrow-minded people fucking waste”

Oh yeah, haven’t been to skaterock.com in a while. There are some awesome JFA artifacts there. I just added those links. Thanks, er, uh, Black Jesus.

From the perspective of somebody who grew up in Phoenix, I can personally attest to Brannon always bringing it – whether on stage or in a backyard. The guy gave it what he had. Always an inspiration to us young groms.
