Maloof Money Cup changes everything…
July 8th, 2009 by kilwag

At first I was aloof about the Maloof Money cup… Yes, Thank you. Good night! Don’t forget to tip your bartenders. I’ll be here for the rest of the month…
OK. The idea of a building a concrete street course for one event and then tearing it down seemed absurd and grossly decadent, but it turns out California Skateparks was using mostly Spohn Ranch (I think?) reusable prefab concrete elements. I saw some of last year’s street footage on network TV of all places, and it was enjoyable. The participants fell all over themselves to gush about the event and the prize money, which seemed a little forced in the way the TV program presented it. It was almost like extreme ass kissing to guarantee another event. This year the vert event (was there one last year?) features a crazy ramp with a mini megaramp. I’m not sure how that fits into the judging or whether or not it will be a separate event. The total purse is at $450,000, and Fuel TV will being doing a live HD webcast. To get you in the mood they have a video teaser, and interviews with Bryan Herman, Braydon Szafranski and Joe Maloof one of the egos, I mean wallets behind the event. He says Geoff Rowley designed the street course this year instead of Rob Dyrdek, but I swear they were hyping Paul Rodriguez as last year’s designer.
Maloof Money Cup: Jully 10-12. It’s a shame that this conflicts with the equally as anticipated Kilwag Passing the Cup for Money & Lack of a Job Contest. (I’m not saying it’s fixed, but I am favored to win. )
Thanks to Concretins for the tip.

The cool thing about the broadcast last year was it was actually filmed by skate filmers, not your average tv camera guys so it was actually some what watchable.
There was a vert contest last year, I think PLG won. Although surprisingly the cash prize for street was more. I think the vert winner got some cash and a car. Which is backwards if you think about how coverage for contests previously was all about vert (see x-games, dew tour, etc.).

I concur SB… and not showing it live on Network TV made a huge difference, as they were able to do some decent editing. (Quick too, only 2 or 3 days after the event.)

1. Contests suck. Next step the Olympics or the high school skateboard contest leagues(wait, no, California already started that). Contest suck, pure and simple. Skateboarding isn’t about being judged, proving your better than someone else, or skating the “right” way, its about doing whatever the hell you want, doing something creative, and having fun.
2. Joe and Gavin Magoof should stick to basketball, owning hotels and banks, and making shitty tv shows/movies.
3. Its nice that skateboarders are able to make some money but its sad to see how easily we are bought out. Also why is it that it takes these businessmen for skaters to finally start making some big money?. No one else in this 5.2 billion dollar industry can afford to offer big prize money? Zumiez you did 401 Million in sales last year and you can’t do anything other than a coach tour? Shoe companies you can’t chip in? No, all the shoe sales at Zumiez, Zappos.com, Journey’s, and Dillard’s aren’t making you enough money?
4. After consulting and hiring all the right people to make a nice looking park, it is just demolished afterwards. Lots of cities don’t have skateparks and could sure use one. Its ridiculous and wasteful just to demolish the park after the contest. Why not do this in a city that could use a park? (The skater’s of Philadelphia are still trying to raise money for their park why not help them out?) At least this way the Magoofs would be contributing to skateboarding as a whole, instead of only lining a few skaters’ pockets.
5. The Magoofs aren’t skateboarders they are “bros” and businessmen, and don’t have any right to do anything in skateboarding (look em up on out TMZ they’re way ‘core). Don’t fool yourself by thinking that they enjoy skating, want to help us out, etc. they saw a business opportunity, a way to make money off of us, and went for it.
