SOTW 6-23-08: Skate Demo at 1982 Iowa State Fair

This week’s Shot of the Week is Lewis “Iowask8er” Brundige skating a demo on a quarterpipe at the 1982 Iowa State Fair. There are so many small things that add up to make this a great shot. There’s the combination of the Van Halen t-shirt and Joan Jett sticker on the bottom of the board juxtaposed with “Disneyland” on the tail. Then there’s the quarter pipe demo. Lewis must have had to push his ass off to get that high up. It’s a nice size air, as you can see by the shadow of the photographer and ramp on the asphalt. Lewis is still skating, and has a page full of skate video info as well as a collection of mostly vintage photos. Check out this week’s Shot of the Week.

YA! That is BAD ASS! I love this! hahaha! Those must be the backward looking trucks that someone mentioned. “Daisy Duke’s” W/junk flash?!?! or.. a little something for the judges! Jelly bean wheel colors! Yaaa! I wish we could see the shoes.

    check the front truck.

Variflex all the way. He’s rocking the El Gato (my favorite deck) with the Variflex trucks. Classic shot.

Degrees of separation; at first glance he looks like Eddie “the eagle” Edwards, Britain’s hapless ski-jump competitor at the 1988 winter olympics. It’s the funky oversized glasses he’s “rocking” that do it.

  6. Brad aka handstandman!! Says:

It’s Mark Mothersbaugh from DEVO. haha!

    Whip it good!

  8. Swamp Says:

Dude looks ALOT like Kevin “Squid” Dickman of Dayton Ohio.

  9. iain Says:

Not only is he rocking the Variflex connection trucks, but for the total varibot experience, he’s got the El Gato deck AND what looks like a set of Variflex C-3 wheels. The run up for that air must have been about two miles, ‘cos they were the SLOWEST wheels of the entire 1980’s! I’d have given him more bonus points for displaying a MAD RATS sticker on the Flyaway, but still, that is one Rad foto……
