eBay Watch: March 2008

Well, March was maybe the best month I’ve seen since I’ve started doing this column. I feature 43 items, of which 13 went for over $1,000. That’s got to be a record, but I’m not going back and looking through all of the old columns to validate. And two decks went for over $3,000.

By the way, thanks to everybody who writes in with kind words about the column. I appreciate all of your kind words. The fact that we get so many hits and so much feedback from all over the world is amazing, and it’s what keeps me doing it month after month.

Just for Randy, this month’s Baywatch is fueled by Hornsby cider and the rocking punk rock sound of The Carbonas. Have you been missing the Briefs recently? Then give the Carbonas a try. They’ll fix you right up. Their new album is available on iTunes, if you are interested.

So let’s get to the meat..

The typeface on those Sims wheels scream SEVENTIES! I kind of like that Town and Country Ken Park, I mean it’s very dated looking, but for the time it looked good. Beats the Devil Fish and anything Non Blender from G&S.

That Jeremy Klein deck art is a Norman Rockwell appropriation. It’s excusable that you didn’t know that since you are a UK native. Very iconic Americana.

  2. duders Says:

you talk about julien stranger like he was a has been from the natas era, when in fact he was just a young gun getting started… i would think everyone now knows that he runs anti hero, etc…

  3. conahan Says:

Kilwag is trying to create a diversion to keep anyone from revealing that he was the winning bidder on that sticker album and having his wife find out.

  4. houseofneil Says:

uh, Ok Duders. I don’t think that’s what I was saying. I was saying that he doesn’t get enough credit. That’s all.

  5. JF Says:

great column again….love it. I paid $80 for that same Cab deck 2 yrs ago (same color)…glad to see it was a good investment.

  6. enemy combatant Says:

“The typeface on those Sims wheels scream SEVENTIES!”

Not really. Style Moderne fonts like that one came in during the teens and twenties.

  7. sublime has no talent? Says:

    thats just a little harsh

  8. Kilwag Says:

Let me rephrase, it screams 70’s interpretation of art nouveau.

  9. Circle Of Skulls Says:

Re: Powell Peralta Caballero “ban this” deck. “Personally I think this graphic is horrendous: it looks like a rip-off of a Nash deck or something. And what’s with the shit-eating grin on the dragon?” Brilliant!

  10. brad Says:

Great read. Shocked that you rate the Malba though. The colors are so dull and cheap that it looks like something you’d win at the fair.

  11. brad Says:

Rando- first confessing to the Ken Park deck and then being schooled on art history by king of the douchebags EC? please stop!

  12. Kilwag Says:

Yeah, no doubt. As I was typing that the first time I was wondering if I should clarify it and I thought, hell no, nobody is going pay attention, or challenge it for that matter. But we get a high class of low brow fans here. So now I clarify. There was a neo art-nouveau fad in 70’s. Those Sims wheels scream bad made for TV movie set decorations of Hollywood opulence. Next guest lecturer is David Carson.

And come on, that Ken Park graphic is better than the Joe Lopes graphic, regardless of who drew it.

Man, that Mike V board is weird.

  13. DEWEY Says:

thanks neil, hope the weather is letting you ride.later

  14. Glenn Says:

Looks like it’d be a good time to sell my Strokers, or at least it might be if a dollar was worth more than 50 pence at the moment…

Sort your economy out you bastards!

  15. houseofneil Says:

yeah, we got a nice weekend last weekend. But it’s going to suck again this saturday. Chance of snow. It’s fucking April!

  16. Kilwag Says:

Whaddya mean “Sort out our economy?” Our President says everything is A OK.

Don’t make us invade you! We couldn’t take the prosperity.

  17. Lmobb Says:

is there even a such thing as a randy colvin deck pulling in less than $1500?

  18. enemy combatant Says:

“The colors are so dull and cheap that it looks like something you’d win at the fair.”

It takes a real sh*t for brains like you to actually take skateboard graphics seriously. Or punk rock either.

  19. Kilwag Says:

Really EC? I thought this was a discussion about skateboard graphics. Maybe you are in the worng place. What about typefaces? Does it take real shit for brains to take that stuff seriously?

  20. enemy combatant Says:

I thought it was about ebay skateboard sales. It actually sucks when it concentrates on graphics ‘cuz they pretty much blow, just like punk rock music. When rare unridden completes go for peanuts and really lame graphics on stupid 90’s boards go for thousands it just shows how far people like “brad” have their heads up their asses. All of the skate “lifestyle” stuff is garbage anyhow as far as I’m concerned.

I take it you are annoyed? That’s pretty rich. Ban me or go skate.

  21. Kilwag Says:

    Mumbler!

  22. Prickly Pete Says:

Ban Me or Go Skate! That was that out of control skate contest they used to do in Texas, the guy from Zorlac used to run it. Schneer did that wallride, r’member?! Ban Me or Go Skate ‘89!!! Thanks for taking us back, Enema.

  23. Thee Sunnyvaler Says:

    Neil,

Best one ever! Yep, T&C did have a pro team including Johnnee Kop who later rode for Hosoi. A friend of mine who was a Del Mar local as a kid told me everyone called Ken Park “Krap Nek”, his name spelled backwards. I think you were right in saying Julien Stranger never got the credit he deserved. He was actually the first to do the hydrant spin. Natas was the first to get footage of it and the rest is history.

  24. LP Says:

yeah fuckin johnee kop was a real douchebag. we used to hang with this rodney mullen wannabe named sean coons (who was sponsored by powell and also wore those little pink shorts, knee pads, and no shirt) who told me once some kid asked kop for his autograph and kop said, ill give you a dollar not to. ken park was a prince fanatic, and he got extremely fat.

  25. stan Says:

Believe all of the passion that mike V shows for skateboarding. You can belive his right hook as well. However, in 1990 Vallely came up to Centralia Washington to hang out at Frontside grind skateshop and skate with all of us kids. He sounded no different then as a hard teenager than he does now as an adult. Very protective and caring for his sport. Too bad other rider who have a paradise lifestyle couldn’t be the same.

  26. Flynn Seddon Says:

I just want to say how great your work is. Your a funny bastard as well.. I look forward to each new review and must say I use it all the time when resourcing boards. I have a few buys now that have made your ewatch so that is a stoker for me. When do you decide to touch up a board or not and does that effect desire for other collectors?

    Cheers

    Flynn

  27. heath Says:

I just pulled a board from the quiver… a Psycho Stick mini. A weird shape, weird graphic, 1986? If you are interested, check it out. It’s used, but the most exciting parts of the graphic are still intact.

I am also selling an old set of Ventures in 9/10 condition. I will deliver in Portland, or meet at a skatepark outside of PDX on a sunny day.
