More lasered skateboards
March 13th, 2007 by conahan

An earlier post showed some laser-created relief on skateboards. Here is a Flickr set of similar work. I think they have one of these rigs out at Nike. I have seen experiments with decorating various items: shoes, cellular phones, laptop computers.

I wonder if there have been any attempts to use it to enhance performance. What would be the optimum pattern and amout of material you could cut away and still maintain rigidity and strength?

Thanks for the heads up Craig.

This one is trippy. I wonder if they considered different colored dies on each veneer. Different depths of etching would reveal different colors. Whee!

Yes Mark, Nike has been using laser for performance (optimized flexibility, support, weight, breathability) but mostly for aesthetic. I know a guy down there and was gonna ask him if he could do a few decks for me. He’s done a few cool grip tape jobs for on of my friends. I like the idea of different depth and different colors.

I’m talking about skateboard performance. I think Coulter has some experience on that. I’m thinking some BuckyFuller action. I like a light skateboard but no tail flex please.
